I usually ask how their 'little one' is - most people I know are dog owners, and - large or small - they think of their dogs as 'little ones'. It usually (although embarrassingly not always) works! By the time they've mentioned the name of the animal, I've realised who they are and give a big sigh of relief - crisis averted once again!!!
