Does anyone know what he sounded like...I can't seem to find an interview or anything....and he's a bit before my time....IMDB says he was born in Cali, so that pretty much knocks out a funny southern or NY accent being the reason.

Speaking of southern accents/Levon Helm, when we watched the movie "Shooter".....Levon has a small part in it, as an expert gunsmith....after his scene was over, my son said ...that guy sounded funny...he talks like you do daddy.
