A true story. Really. When I was a student at William and Mary, one of my friends was Wayne King J.... A dirt poor white country boy; deceptively smart.
This kid, on the day that Otis Redding died, went into mourning for a day or two. When he did show up for class, the distinguished old government professor asked him where he had been. King replied "Otis Redding died." The prof, an old Virginia gentleman, without missing a beat, said
"Good excuse."

I see what you are saying...it doesn't flow like the other. He has made it his own by phrasing differently...I like Ben King's version better but this one is good as well.
