The Raleigh Ringers, a handbell choir from Raleigh, North Carolina. It was founded in 1990 and is under the direction of David M. Harris. The group has appeared on PBS' holiday special and had also toured France. This year they received the Medal of Arts Award from the City of Raleigh Arts Commission.
Type of Music Played:
They play secular, sacred and even pop music. Listen to audio samples and watch a video of their performance. It's quite fascinating to see them perform and listen to music created by handbells of different shapes and sizes. Some of the bells they use are Malmark and Whitechapel handbells.
Current Members of The Raleigh Ringers:
The members of The Raleigh Ringers all share a passion for bell ringing and they also have degrees in music and/or play another instrument. The current members are:
Bob Auchter - Played piano and tuba when he was young.
Andrea Berry - Plays and teaches piano.
Ruth Brown - Plays and teaches piano, flute and recorder.
Keith Burt - He plays the piano.
Kevin Dietzschold - Plays the tuba.
Chad Etzel - He plays the saxophone.
Erin Glendening - She has been ringing bells since she was 12.
Amy Harris - Plays the flute.
More Members:
Sandra Hopson - Treasurer and charter member of the group.
Cindy Massey - Secretary and charter member of the group.
David Metz - Has been playing handbells since he was 6.
Crystal Moran - Studied organ and vocal performance.
Lisa Phillips - Started ringing bells when she was 11.
Andy Punch - Plays piano and trombone.
Nancy Ritter - Managing Director of the group, she also plays the flute.
Diane vanDijk - Started ringing bells in her teens.
Ann Lowe Vodicka - Music Librarian for the group.
Audrey Yosai - Has a degree in music education and performance, also plays the oboe.
Upcoming Performances:
The Raleigh Ringers are very much in demand, with performances scheduled from December 2007 to November 2008.. They will perform in varied locations in the US.
Auditions:
Auditions for The Raleigh Ringers are held every January, returning members must also re-audition. There are specific criterias to be met in order to get accepted and auditions are held by the director of The Raleigh Ringers.
Workshops and Festivals Offered:
They hold festivals for children and adults. The Capital Area Young Ringers Festival is scheduled on February 23, 2008 while the Capital Area Handbell Festival Conference is set on November 15, 2008.
