Busy doesn't really matter. There is a inherent cost to move a container from China to California and not that many sofas will fit in a container. I don't know all the numbers you are faced with (and don't have the time to acquaint myself with them) but you may well be barking up the wrong tree, and if I were in your shoes I'd be focusing on high value for the volume and avoiding big and bulky things.
But like most people who undertake to import themselves find out, the costs of doing so at low volume are often high enough to make it less profitable than to work with a company that's already importing in large volume.
