Henry James' admiration for and friendship with Nathaniel Hawthorne have been documented, but were his views on Herman Melville's highly experimental fiction?
Henry James?
Are you sure?
So sorry, the question was actually "What were his views on Melville's highly experimental fiction". And I do mean Henry James, William James's younger brother. I haven't been able to find any references in the biographies & criticism so far. This strikes me as odd, since James was a voracious reader, and even hailed new talent such as Marcel Proust before he passed away. Did he burn his views along with the letters in his bonfires, perhaps?
