I have a little fella who is unhappy about being a boy.
Part of this is because his experience of how men behave has been awful. He therefore thinks men are awful, and that being a grown up man must suck.
Not being a guy and all, I was wondering if the men could give me some cool stuff about being a male that I haven't thought of...not the "one mood all the time" stuff, or "you get to **** women"...he's a little kid...but some true stuff that I can share with him. Light hearted is great as well as serious.
Stuff about being a dad would be great, too.
I think he'd get a kick out of a kind of "my male panel that I consulted say........".
you can write your name in the snow....
Well, yeah that could be cool and fun, but it doesn't snow much in Australia.
I'm listening in dlowan, I'm curious what guy count as good about being a boy.
Well, I've a small story that happened not long ago:
- I have two nephews, 14 and 10.
They were talking with me about different things of life.
The older one then said: When I'll be an adult, I want to be like you Tonton (uncle).
And the other one just said: me too!
Feels great being a guy (not that being a girl isn't great either)...
Maybe I'll think of more, later...
Maybe you could tell him that although he has experience of men being horrid, you could make him feel as tho he could change the pattern and he could be a role model for other boys/men.
Just because other people are horrid, doesnt mean he will be.
Sorry, not much help as I dont have the ole twig n berries.
1.You can move heavy things.
2. You don't get menstrual cramps.
3. You get to leave your clothing all over the floor and eventually some woman (mother, sister, wife, girlfriend) will get sick of looking at them and pick them up for you.
4. You will be paid more than a woman and probably have to work less doing the same job.
5. You have a better chance of becoming a world leader and making the bad men behave.
I'll try and think of more later.
Trucks.
Wait.. see if you can find out what "things" the boy associates with the man. Dont choose one of those.
Men are into "Things", taking things apart and putting them back together.
Building things, constructive pursuits. being able to analyse a problem and create a solution.
I like when my kids ask me for answers (why did they build the great wall of china) or to solve problems or my opinion. I also like being able to see the pitfalls and guide my children around them.
Hugs are good too. dads get free hugs just because.
Sheds... the boy needs a shed. Every good boy needs a shed.
Is there a mens shed he could go to? with grandfathery type characters hanging around building stuff.

Just put a fabulous scarf around his neck and let him be gay.
I don't know if this is what you're looking for, sort of a positive role model thing, but I'll put it out there anyway ...
Right now I'm working on an interior design project for a man. He had a crappy childhood. But, because he could focus his talents, when he grew up he made a lot of money in real estate development. Then he took his money and opened a chain of martial arts facilities as non-profit organizations. Everyone is welcome, but he puts special emphasis on children, and if they can't afford the fees, he lets them join for free. The martial arts let the children learn confidence and gives them skills to deal with bullies. Now he's concentrating in setting up an international standards alliance to make sure all the instructors have the proper skills to deal with children.
Of course, a woman could have done the same thing. It's just more likely to have been a man.
It's not about being a guy or a girl. It's about being a whole person.
Also, being a "guy" is not cool but being a man is. One of my favorite lines is from the movie "Say Anything." "Don't be a guy. Be a man. The world is full of guys."
You get to be lots of things in the world, and gender only matters in a few.
I am, or have been:
A son, a brother, a father.
A spouse.
A driver.
A diver.
A pilot.
A woodworker.
A patient.
A computer engineer.
A teacher.
A student.
A fighter.
A peacemaker.
Generous.
Selfish.
A builder.
A gardener.
An audience.
A musician.
People are people. Some are jerks. Some are saints. Most are just middling along, doing the best they can.
I posed your question to my resident authority on boyhood. In the world according to Mo boys are better than girls because:
Girls don't like to get dirty or wrestle.
Girls like to play with Barbies.
Boys are better bike riders.
Boys can wear their hair really short and never have to brush it.
Boys are stronger and they can run faster.
Boys are funnier.
Boys are better wall-ball players.
Boys aren't afraid of skeletons and zombies.
All of the ghostbusters are boys.
Boys get to drive forklifts.
He keeps adding to the list. I'll keep you updated.
Boys get to grow up to be whatever they can become, and people will never say he can't because...
But I love Boomerangs list much better.
Mostly he needs to be let to do whatever makes his heart race, and you get to help him find what that is.
Enjoy.
Boys have better toys -- I guess that continues to be the case when they grow into men. I'm thinking Legos and dart guns.
Men get to be in charge, lead people, have influence. (I know I'm stereotyping, just trying to give dlowan what she needs.) Firefighters, policemen, soldiers -- mostly men. Men get to be heroes.
Women say "We can do that too!"
Men don't have to.
Except for childbearing.
And we'll pass on that, thank you.
He can get to be the Pope

It's just a chance you have to take...

But he has to pass the "testiculos habet, et bene pendente" test performed by the the ballgrabber-in-chief...
Maybe the best thing is getting to take everything apart, and figure out what makes it work.
Putting it back together is optional...

Having become a reluctant hairstylist for two little girls... this has to be the winner.
