Should one be optimistic, or is that a foolish way to be, giving us unrealistic expectations (as opposed to being a realistic)? Is it healthier to be an optimist? Can one choose to be an optimist, or is that set at birth, or early in our lives?
Always be optimistic, but also work at being successful at whatever you do.
Positive thinking is always better for one's health.
I agree with CI that it's better for one's health, both mental and physical, but I'm a realist, too.
"expect the best, be prepared for the worst."
i can go into that using more words if it's really necessary.

As Mame said, we also need to be "realists."
I'd say hope for the best, but don't be naive. Realism with a good sprinkle of optimism.
Everything must be started with optimism.

Even when you've been knocked down a few times; never give up!

However, if you do give up; drugs are the most glamorous way to go.
Mmmm, crystal meth...
guarded optimism works best for me.
think positive, but be aware that stuff can go horribly, horribly wrong...
The trick is to take responsibility for your own screw-ups!
