This happened four years ago, and I think I already figured out the answer to 'who's to blame', but I'd like to do a poll anyways.
So I was in this guy's dorm room, we were all watching a video. I was laying on his bed next to him (there was nowhere else to sit), and he started giving me nipple twisters (rough housing). I started getting pissed, feeling like i was being wronged, so I kicked over his trash can and ran away, making a mess. I later got in trouble for this.
I think that it was my fault for these reasons:
1.) I should've expressed to him that his rough housing bothered me and told him to stop before lashing out at him like that. If someone does something to you that you don't like, and it isn't obviously abuse (rough housing doesn't quite equal abuse), then you should just put up your fists and tell them to stop or you will hit them somewhere.
2.) If they don't stop then you should hit them directly, not mess with their property indirectly. That's the only appropriate thing to do.
So I think I learned a couple things from that. What do you think?

I think I will never understand men.
You should hit him directly? That is rarely the best option.
All sounds a little homoerotic to me.

I'm a man, and
I don't understand men. The only thing you need to understand is that most of them are unfair assholes, plain and simple.
The proper response would have been a swift karate chop to the testicles.
All in good fun.
fist fight more "appropriate" than kicking over a trash can? who knew.
It really sucks growing up male, b/c many young men are a.) cruel and b.) immature. It really sucks.
Which isn't to say that many young women aren't cruel and immature- but at least they tend to do a lot less physical **** to each other.
Yep. You probably should have punched him out, at least if you knew ahead that it would still be bothering you four years later.
Here's an idea: get up and walk out of the room.
Drews - the trash can was not responsible for your irritation. You are correct that taking it out on the trash can was inappropriate.
In your defense, having a teenaged boy who's friends think such rough housing is hilarious and who don't always know when to stop... Yes, you should have told him to stop and then whacked him good when he didn't.
(Girls don't understand that. But, apparently it's important in establishing the pecking order, just like in the rest of the animal kingdom. At least that's what bear and my son tell me.)
It's good to be an alpha.
Eh, I think you should have shot the bastid in the head, kicked the trash can across the room and then left.
It's not good to be a sociopath.
What was in the trash can?
little helpless baby kittens.
This happened four years ago.
Um. How can we help you get past this?

The correct response to twisties is an erection.
