Heligoland? Is there really such a place? Laughing Sounds like a good retirement spot for former marching band players.

Czech anthem, on the other hand is totally wussy. Not a drop of blood, screw that.
(Actually, THEIR anthem manages to move me emotionally a little bit. Ours is just pathetic).

Where is my home? Where is my home?
Waters murmurs across the meads
Pinewoods rustle upon the cliff-rocks,
Bloom of spring shines in the orchard,
Paradise on Earth to see!
And that is the beautiful land,
The Czech land, my home!
The Czech land, my home!
Where is my home? Where is my home?
If, in the heavenly land, you have met
Tender souls in agile frames,
Of clear mind, vigorous and prospering,
And with a strength that frustrates all defiance,
That is the glorious race of Czechs,
Among the Czechs (is) my home!
Among the Czechs, my home!

Whoa!

That is indeed the biggest softie of an anthem I've ever seen.

Appropriate too, for those (say the stereotype) mild-mannered, self-deprecating, gentle Czechs.

It is certainly in sharp contrast with:

... most national anthems!

Check out these concise, funny reviews of the degree of "dangerous content" in each African national anthem, for example. Chuckle.

This one on the anthems of Latin-America is funny too.

There's follow-up pages on the other continents as well (the Asian ones are very well-behaved), all under the title Deutschland Uber What Now?

The European ones are here. They're not as funny as the other ones, but the Marseillaise deserves special mention:

Quote:
Country: France
Dangerous lyrics: "tyranny", "bloody" (x2), "howling", "soldiers" (x2), "fearsome", "cut the throats of your sons and consorts", "arms" (x3), "battalion", "march" (x2), "blood", "horde", "slaves", "conspiratorial", "traitors" (x2), "vile" (x2), "chains", "irons", "outrage", "slavery", "foreign cohorts", "phalanx", "mercenary", "cut down", "chained", "warrior", "yield", "yoke", "despots" (x2), "tremble" (x2), "tyrants", "shame", "parricidal", "schemes", "blows", "fall", "fight", "warriors", "sad", "regret", "accomplices", "tigers", "pitilessly ripping open their mother's breasts", "pit", "ashes", "jealous", "coffins", "avenging" (x2), "defenders", "manly", "force", "death", "enemies", "triumph".
Notes: Um, holy ****. Without question the most batshit national anthem from beginning to end.

as a born HAMBURGER , i have to ask that the song praising the REEPERBAHN also have a place here !
whenever i have told someone that i was born in hamburg and mentioned the word REEPERBAHN , there were usually lots of smiles on peoples faces Laughing , no matter if they were americans , british or canadians - former soldiers and sailors seem to be particularly familiar with that famous place .
there is nothing about war or glory in that song , only love and women ; what could possibly be wrong with that .
i don't think anyone will ever be offended by that patriotic song !

Quote:
Auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins

Ralph Arthur Roberts / Sikorski
1
Silbern klingt und springt die Heuer,
heut speel ick dat Feine ous.
Heute ist mir nichts zu teuer,
morgen geht die reise los.
Langsam bummle ich ganz alleine
die Reeperbahn nach der Freiheit rauf.
Treff' ich eine recht Blonde, recht Feine,
die gab'le ich mir auf:

Refrain
Komm doch - liebe Kleine,

Refrain
Komm doch - liebe Kleine, ...

Nimh -- am I having a "deja vu" now, or have we discussed those anthems in a thread many years ago? (Possibly even on Abuzz.)

Thomas, you are correct. I remember someone started a thred proposing that America the BEasutiful be sdopted as the US National Anthem. The reason was that the present US national anthem was

1Impossible to sing by most people

2Full of militaristic reference

3 sounds kind of amateurish.

I dont know who it was started the tread but I recall taking part. So, in a sense, gungas thread reprises that one.

... not to mention "violates the separation of church and state". Listen to the fourth and last stanza:
Oh thus be it ever when freeman shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation Blessed with vict'ry and peace shall the heav'n rescued land Praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation Then conquer we must when our cause is just And this be our motto: "In God is our trust!" And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I hope the Supreme Court declares the Star-Spangled Banner unconstitutional soon.
