What does "shawty" mean?

I easily notice the word "shawty" in south hip-hop lylics.
I have tried to get to know the word but, even in the dictionary
I failed to know the meaning of the word.

I guess shawty would be a kind of broken English and realized that it is widely used among Afri-american English.

Would anyone know about this word? Surprised

I think it comes from referring to someone, especially a girl, as "shorty." Then, sort of loosely pronounced, it becomes "shawty." I'm not 100% sure about it, though.

Cyphercat is exactly right.

Though I don't recommend using it as an endearment for your beloved, sniperkwon From S. Korea. Once, in intimate circumstances, I referred to my (now ex-) girlfriend as "my Boo," and she left me. Forever.

What hip-hop artists do you like?

Thank you
Thank you for your explanation, guys.
It really helps me understand it.

Does Gargamel mean that the word 'shawty' would be a little offensive or too casual to other listeners? And it sounds annoying them?

and I am curious about What 'boo' means Gargamel mentioned.
Also refering to girlfriend as a casual and sometimes offensive term?

It's not easy to get to know words (not found in dictionary)

Gargamel, you said you are wondering what hiphop artists I like, aren't you?

Especially I like
T-pain, T.I, Lil Jon, akkon, nate dogg, Ne-YO, R.kelly. etc..

Their every piece of music has good feeling to my ears. Melodic music.
You also seem to like music ^^

Sniperkwon,

I was just making fun of myself, joking around. In truth, I think it is good to find a girl who is okay with you calling her "shawty" or "boo," if that's really how you want to express yourself. It's meant to be an endearment, not offensive.

I like Nate Dogg, too, but I am unfamiliar with most new mainstream hip-hop. However I do listen to quite a bit of indie/underground hip-hop. My favorite artists are Cannibal Ox, Mr. Lif, People Under the Stairs, etc. Also, Jedi Mind Tricks.

The exception is Ghostface Killah and anything Wu-Tang related. That is major label hip-hop I truly appreciate.

Here are the top two definitions from urbandictionary.com
Quote:

1. shawty (654 up, 120 down)

Fine ass woman, or your girl.
FINE ASS WOMAN--Sup shawty, how you doin

Girlfriend-----me an my shawty went to da sex shop yesterday and got some ****, yo.

2. shawty (433 up, 101 down)

A term orginating in Atlanta that, in the beginning, referred to a short person or child, but the span of the word has grown to include any and all people, especially a girl that is attractive; it is mostly used as a term of endearment to others or just a way of addressing someone, like 'Wassup Man,' Instead of "Man", shawty is used.
NOTE: Can be shortened to "shawt" or "shawtdawg".

"Waddup Shawty, when you coming over?"

In the note they use the slang 'shawtdawg' - 'dawg', in Georgia, is the phonetic pronunciation of dog in the regional accent.

Actually, shawty SHOULD mean a child. Nowadays, and I do not know how, it got to mean a woman.
