I need your help. I have inherited a small, fuzzy bear and I'm trying to find out if it has any value. My Dad gave it to my Mom in the early 1930s. It had a bottle of perfume inside at the time.

He's about 4" tall and has articulating arms and legs. the head turns, too. He looks like a Steiff bear, but there's no button in his ear. Here are a couple of pics.

Anybody seen one of these before?

All I know about old teddy bears is what I've heard on the Antiques Road Show. The most valuable old teddy bears appear to be Steiff bears. I don't think yours is a Steiff, but what do I know. You might want to check it out on the Web.

Steiff made dinosaurs? (BTW, you spelled it right.) Live and loin.

Maybe I had the only one. The film editor on that trip I got to go on when I was 17 noticed that I liked the giant dinosaur statue in Vernal, Utah - well, it was there then - and got me the Steiff as a gift. With my luck, that's now priceless.

No labels. My logic tells me that since my Dad bought this during the Depression when he had no money, he probably bought it at a dime store. I need to know what other companies made bears in those days.

My search on the web hasn't gotten me very far.

You mention articulating arms and legs. Does the head articulate as well? Or is it fixed?

If I were to guess my bet would be that it is a Farnell bear similar to this one:

btw, this page has a good listing of many bear makers and some info on identifying bears from each of them:

Thanks for all the links. I looked at them all. I don't think it's any of those makers, however. The bear I have is not a stuffed bear. As I said, it once held perfume, so the body is hard. The head was the stopper for the perfume bottle, I think. I'm a fraid to pull it off, in case I break it.

In the 1920s and 1930s Schuco (Schreyer & Co.) manufactured a variety of mechanical and also novelty bears of all sizes -including those with head movement. Also at this time, miniature bears were made - some in the form of perfume bottles or ladies compacts and in a variety of coloured mohair.

That's interesting, dadpad. I'm not interested in selling this bear, but it is good to know it's value for insurance purposes. I think I'll stick the money into an appraisal. I'd also be interested in knowing how to store the little guy to preserve his good condition. Mom kept him in her cedar chest. I think that helped.

How wonderful! Can you put him back in the cedar chest since that has held him so well for this long?

Funny, I was just reading this and thinking... check ebay. Get towards the end and I see dadpad did. Amazing what can be found there.

I can put him in my cedar cabinet. Do you think I should wrap him in something?
