Is it possible to connect to the popular radio stations across the world through your Internet connection? I know this questions is a stab in the dark, but I thought I will pose it anyway. Any idea?

If a radio station decides to transmit its programs over the Internet, (it's called "streaming") then you can listen to it using your computer. Not otherwise. You can't use your computer to listen to just any old radio station, because a computer is not a radio.

If a radio station or a broadcasting system has a website, you can go there and look for a link which says "listen now" or "listen direct" or something like that, or you can find lists of these by using a search site such as Google by typing in "streaming radio stations".

the BBC streams its radio output

I have that option right on my home page. It isn't any regular radio stations. There are many options though and they do have the latest hits.

You might want to check out the Winamp player; it has 1000's of built in stations and tv too. There is also an add on that lets you record programmes (if local laws allow).

If you listen to the far-left propaganda on NPR and BBC you are helping terrorism and you should be locked up. They are mouthpieces for Al-Qaeda and communism.

Awesome.
I have been looking for something that caters to the
electronic community. Others that I have tried did not
have much variety in that area. Winamp kicks ass.

Sure. I listen to the radio over the internet frequently.

Just call up the website of the radio station you want to listen to. If they offer this service, there will be a banner displayed to click on. Then just follow the instructions.
