Old Sheet Music

While trying to do some "downsizing" I came across some old sheet music. Some of it I inherited from my husband's grandmother and some I bought accidentally at a charity auction -- no one had bid (silent auction), I bid $1 over the reserve bid to get the ball rolling and ended up with an arm load of decrepit, falling apart, foxed sheet music. So for fun, I'll post it here before it deteriorates further. Hoping someone will enjoy it. (At least I'll get some typing practice.)

On the Banks of Allan Water by C.E. Horn

On the banks of Allan water
When the sweet spring time did fall
Was the miller's lovely daughter
Fairest of them all.
For his bride a soldier sought her
And a winning tongue had he
On the banks of Allan water
None so gay as she.

On the banks of Allan water
When Autumn spread its store
There I saw the miller's daughter
But she smil'd no more
For the summer grief had brought her
And the soldier false was he
On the banks of Allan water
None so sad as she.

On the banks of Allan water
When winter's snow fell fast
Still was seen the miller's daughter
Chilling blew the blast!
But the miller's lovely daughter
Both from cold and care was free
On the banks of Allan water
There a corpse lay she.

Maguire's Motor Bike (A Tragedy in Four Acts)

Words by Percy French Music by Houston Collisson

It was Mick Maguire made it
All alone and all unaided
For I tell you that a brainy boy was Mick.
And for divilmint and murther
Faith you needn't go no further
Than the bicycle he call'd "The Kill me quick."

Oh! The gearcase was a kettle
Made of good Britannia metal
As good as you would buy in any shop
And when once you set it goin'
Faith there never was no knowin'
Where Maguire's motor bicycle would stop.

But the bike's all right
Not a bit it mattered
For the bike's all right
And none the worse for wear.
Oh! the bike's all right
The rider might be shatter'd
But the bike's all right
So Maguire doesn't care.

'Twould come whizzin' round the corner
And before you'd time to warn her
'Twould be through some poor old woman like a knife.
And sure Flynn the Undertaker
Said to Mick (that was the maker)
That he never was so busy in his life.

Oh! He'd lend it to relations
From whom he'd expectations
And to folks for whom he didn't greatly care
Then Mick would say with sorrow
There'll be funerals tomorrow
And it somehow always happen'd that there were.

But the bike's all right
His uncle tried to cycle
Oh! the bike's all right
And none the worse for wear
Oh! the bike's all right
His money went to Michael
But the bike's all right
So Maguire doesn't care.

(Gee But I Like) Music With My Meals

Words by Seymour Brown Music by Nat D. Ayer

There's a little restaurant on old Broadway
Where they keep the music going night and day.
Oh, even in the morning or the afternoon,
Any time you wander in you hear a tune.
I think the man who owns it has the right idea
He feeds the empty stomach and he pleases the ear
The only reason that I eat there ev'ry night
Is because the music seems to to help my appetite.

Gee that's fine! Oh, strains divine! Everybody order 'cause
I'm going to buy wine!

Think I'll have some soup but first a dry cocktail!
After that I'll have a guinea hen or quail.
It's great to have the music playing while you eat!
Ever see the waiter with the musical feet?
The music seems to permeate the kitchen too!
The cook begins to dance while he is stirring the stew.
Oh, ev'rybody's just as happy as can be
Waiter take another order, Bring the check to me.

That's immense! My brain is dense! Music makes me feel as if
I've got no sense.

CHORUS:

Oh...when...that...orchestra starts in a playing
you can see ev'rybody present swinging and swaying,
You can hear knives and forks beating time on the dishes;
See the waiter's running with the steak and fishes,
When you hear all the boys and the girls harmonizing,
Lordy me but the swing of the tune's appetizing!
I could never explain the way I feel!
Wait until they play another,
you'll forget your home and mother
Gee! but I like music with my meals.

(Repeat chorus)

Beautiful Ohio by Mary Earl Lyric by Ballard Macdonald

Long, long ago
Someone I know
Had a little red canoe
In it room for only two
Love found its start,
Then in my heart
And like a flower grew.

Chorus

Drifting with the current down a moonlit stream
While above the Heavens in their glory gleam
And the stars on high
Twinkle in the sky
Seeming in a Paradise of love divine
Dreaming of a pair of eyes that looked in mine
Beautiful Ohio, in dreams again I see
Visions of what used to be.

Rule Britannia

Words by J. Thomson Music by Dr. Arne

When Britain first at Heav'ns command
Arose from out the azure main
Arose, arose from out the azure main,
This was the charter, the charter of the land,
And guardian Angels sung the strain:
Rule, Britannia, Britannia rule the waves;
Britons never shall be slaves.

Chorus (after each verse):

Rule, Britannia, Britannia rule the waves; Britons never shall be slaves.
(Repeat X 3)

The nations not so bless'd as thee
Must in their turns to tyrants fall
Must in their turns, their turns to tyrants fall;
While thou shalt flourish, shalt flourish, great and free,
The dread and envy of them all.
Rule, Britannia, Britannia rule the waves; Britons never shall be slaves.

Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful from each foreign stroke;
As the loud blast that tears the skies,
Serves but to root thy native Oak.
Rule, &c.

Thee, haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame,
All their attempts to hurl thee down;
Will but arouse thy gen'rous flame,
And work their woe and thy renown.
Rule, &c.

To Thee belongs the rural reign;
Thy cities shall with commerce shine;
All thine shall be the subject main,
And ev'ry shore encircles thine.
Rule, &c.

The muses still, with freedom crown'd,
Shall to the happy coasts repair;
Blest isle: with matchless beauty crown'd,
And manly hearts to guard the fair.
Rule, &c.

I'm Afraid to Come Home in the Dark

Words by Harry Williams Music by Egbert Van Alstyne

"Jonesie" married Mabel, a wise old owl was he,
He told his wife he never drank a stronger thing than tea,
But after honey mooning at night he stayed away
And for a week he never got home 'till the break of day,
At last poor Mabel asked the reason why
Said Jones "I'm going to tell the truth or die."

Chorus

Baby dear (sh) listen here
I'm afraid to come home in the dark
Ev'ry day the papers say
a Robbery in the Park
So I sat alone in the Y.M.C.A.
Singing just like a lark
There's no place like home
But I couldn't come home in the dark.

That night after dinner,
he bade his wife adieu
Said she "Oh no, its dark and so
I'm going to go with you,"
But somehow Jonesy shook her
for he was smooth as silk,
He got home just in time to meet
the man that brought the milk.
His wife stood waiting for him on the stair
While Jonesie and the milkman sang this air.

Chorus

Baby dear (sh) listen here
I'm afraid to come home in the dark
Ev'ry day the papers say
a Robbery in the Park
So I sat alone in the Y.M.C.A.
Singing just like a lark
There's no place like home
But I couldn't come home in the dark.

She kissed him good morning,
to see him she was glad,
And when she tucked him up in bed
says Jones "I guess I'm bad"
Next day the same old story
he came home just at dawn,
But he got sober right away
when he found she was gone.
At noon he heard her slam the garden gate
Said she to Jonesie "Is my hat on straight?"

Chorus

Baby dear (sh) listen here
I'm afraid to come home in the dark
Ev'ry day the papers say
a Robbery in the Park
So I sat alone in the C.A.F.E.
Singing just like a lark
There's no place like home
But I couldn't come home in the dark.

When You Know You're Not Forgotten By The Girl You Can't Forget

Words by Ed. Gardenier Music by J. Fred Helf

Gently the breeze sighs thro' the trees,
Two sweethearts strolling alone,
She heard him say at dawn of day,
"Far from your side I must roam,"
Dear ere I go, just let me know,
You won't forget when we part,
One who loves you fondly and true,
It cheers a sad lonely heart.

Chorus

When you know you're not forgotten
By the girl you can't forget
When you find the girl you left behind
Is thinking of you yet,
'Round you heart a feeling stealing,
Comes to drive away regret,
When you know you're not forgotten
By the girl you can't forget.

"Roses may fade" answered the maid,
"Clouds may turn sunshine to gloom,
But in my heart tho' we're apart
Love for you ever will bloom,
Thro' weary years thro' smiles and tears,
You'll find me faithful and true,
Dear heart you'll learn when you return,
That I'm still waiting for you."

Chorus

When you know you're not forgotten
By the girl you can't forget
When you find the girl you left behind
Is thinking of you yet,
'Round you heart a feeling stealing,
Comes to drive away regret,
When you know you're not forgotten
By the girl you can't forget.

If I Only Had A Home Sweet Home

Words by J. Johns Music by A.L. McDermott

'Twas a party for the little ones,
And ere they all could go,
They sang the song of "Home Sweet Home,"
The one we all love so.
With out, a ragged child looked on,
His heart so lone and sad,
He never had a home, sweet home,
'Mid sobs and tears he said:

Chorus

If I only had a home, sweet home,
Some one to care for me,
Like all the other boys and girls,
How happy I would be;
A kind papa and a mama dear
To call me all their own,
This world would be all sunshine
If I had a home, sweet home.

The little ones now homeward bound,
So happy and so free;
The ragged child still wanders 'round,
No home, sweet home has he;
No cozy little bed for him,
The cold, cold ground instead,
And as he lays him down to sleep
So mournfully he said:

Chorus

If I only had a home, sweet home,
Some one to care for me,
Like all the other boys and girls,
How happy I would be;
A kind papa and a mama dear
To call me all their own,
This world would be all sunshine
If I had a home, sweet home.

Honey Boy

Words by Jack Norworth Music by Albert Von Tilzer

Must you really sail away my Honey Boy
Must you go
Don't you know
When your ship sails down the bay, my Honey Boy
I'll be true my Honey Boy, to you
For I love you best of all, my Honey Boy
Don't you sigh
Time will fly
When you're on the deep blue sea,
Try and think sometimes of me,
I'll be waiting anxiously, Honey Boy.

Chorus

Honey Boy
I hate to see you leaving
Honey Boy
You know my heart is grieving
When you are sailing
Sailing o'er the sea Honey Boy, Honey Boy
And if ever you should take a notion
To come sailing home across the ocean
Honey dear, never fear
I'll be waiting, waiting, waiting for you
Honey Boy.

When you come back home again my Honey Boy
You can guess
I'll say yes
I'll walk down the village lane, my Honey Boy
To the church, my Honey Boy, with you
We'll be wed and settle down, my Honey Boy
With you dear always near
In a cottage all our own,
Just for you and me alone,
It will be our Home sweet Home, Honey Boy.

Chorus

Honey Boy
I hate to see you leaving
Honey Boy
You know my heart is grieving
When you are sailing
Sailing o'er the sea Honey Boy, Honey Boy
And if ever you should take a notion
To come sailing home across the ocean
Honey dear, never fear
I'll be waiting, waiting, waiting for you
Honey Boy.

Mamma's in Heaven

Words and Music by E. Ninian

Two little children, a boy and a girl,
sat by an old church door.
The girl's little feet were as brown as the curl
That fell on the dress that she wore.
The boy's coat was faded, and hatless his head;
A tear shone in each little eye.
"Why don't you run home to your mamma," I said;
And this was the maiden's reply:

Refrain

"Mamma's in heaven, they took her away,
Left Jim and I alone.
We come here to sleep, at the close of the day,
For we have no mamma or home.
We can't earn our bread, we're too little," she said.
"Jim's five years and I'm only seven.
There's no one to love us since papa is dead,
And our darling mamma's in Heaven."

"Papa was lost out at sea, long ago,
we waited all night on the shore.
For he was a life saving captain, you know,
But never came back anymore.
Then mamma got sick, angels took her away.
She said, to a home warm and bright.
'They'll come for my darlings,' she told us, 'some day.'
Perhaps they are coming tonight.

"Maybe tonight they've no room there," she said,
"two little children to keep."
Then placing her arm under little Jim's head,
She kissed him, and both fell asleep.
The sexton came early to ring the church bell,
He found them beneath the snow white.
The angels made room for the orphans to dwell
In Heaven with mamma that night.

Clifton B. Bull, Jr. Songs of the Heart

"She is not fair to outward view"

Poem by Hartley Coleridge Music by Clifton B. Bull, Jr.

She is not fair to outward view,
As many maidens be;
Her loveliness I never knew
Until she smiled on me.
Oh, then I saw her eye was bright,
A well of love, a spring of light.
But now her looks are coy and cold,
To mine they ne'er reply;
And yet I cease not to behold
The lovelight in her eye.
Her very frowns are fairer far
Than smiles of other maidens are.

The Toilers Song

Written and Composed by M. Piccolomini

Footsore and worn, all spent with heavy toil,
Two tatter'd lads sat, resting, on a step;
Breaking a crust, one shook his curly head,
Half grimly smil'd, and then most quaintly said:
"How strange a thing is bread!
If we have it not most surely we can't live;
And yet, to win it, so many men must die!

My father was a miner, down beyond,
And it's little of him ever I have seen;
But I mind me of a loud and thund'ring crash,
And a wailing, and a rushing to the pit,
And a line of shatter'd forms upon the ground,
And my father lying 'mid'st them, cold, and dead,
Dead for bread!"

O happy ones of this fair earth,
While gather'd round your glowing hearth,
Think of the toilers' load of care,
And pray for all, in God's own pray'r:
"Give us, this day, our daily bread!"

"A fisherman was dad," quoth the other,
"And he lov'd me and mother more than life.
Be the 'take' great or small he ever smil'd,
And our poor old happy home was ever bright.
One sailing day he said: "I'll take the boy;"
Would I go? O I leap'd again for joy!
Poor mother wept a world of bitter tears,
But we chaff'd her, and laugh'd away her fears.
Off we sail'd, with a breeze upon the beam;
But at dead of night it blew a fearful gale;
Then our shiver'd mast went crashing by the board;
And my father, O God help him! Look'd at me;
Then. with trembling hands, he lashed me to a plank,
And he kiss'd me, but I never saw him more
For the cruel wave that bore me back to life
Toss'd him stiff and stark at morn up on the shore,
Dead for bread!

O happy ones of this fair earth,
While gather'd round your glowing hearth,
Think of the toilers' load of care
And pray for all, in God's own pray'r:
"Give us, this day, our daily bread!"
