Is having a Bachelor of Arts really useless?

What's so bad with having a Bachelor of Arts?!?

I'm in college, finishing up my diploma in journalism-print & broadcast, and then I am taking Radio and Television Arts in university once I've graduated. I've heard some people say that having a Bachelor of Arts is useless and "a big joke," but the program offered apparently has a good reputation.

Is there something that I'm missing here?

I'm a Canadian resident.

First off, welcome to A2K.

I think a Bachelor's is never, ever useless or wasted. It may not get you to go in the exact direction you had originally thought, but it's no waste. Creativity is a premium skill to have. You can really parlay that in the world of business, if that's where life takes you.

My undergraduate degree is in Philosophy. I do not philosophize at work unless I'm shooting the bull with my coworkers. Instead, I'm an IT worker. But I also communicate, both in writing and verbally, better than nearly all of them. I feel that my education (I wrote a lot of papers!) helped me in that area, and still does.

MJ, Welcome to a2k. Having a BA is "never" bad or useless. It usually provides the entry into a job, but what matters most is one's ability to meet the skill level of the person hiring you. Degrees are only there to open doors for you; what you do after that is up to you. Productivity, skill, quality and honesty is what will get you ahead; not the degree that got you in the door.

My pleasure, and I'm glad it helped. Hey TV and radio sounds exciting, even if all you do is hold the cables. I have two friends who got their degrees in such. One works as a flight attendant (took her a while to settle into a job she liked); the other is a documentary filmmaker and can be found on IMDB (he's not a real biggie but he did get a film made). The ole life path rarely goes in a straight line.

I believe you are missing the experience in the world that only time will give you. In my own opinion, the key to success is finding a niche for one's strong points. Meaning if one is in your field, and is attractive (male or female), someone might recognize that that person, barring a speech impediment, should be in front of a camera. And if not so attractive, the individual should be behind the scenes doing this or that. It is all about honing one's skills in one's niche, I believe. Find a niche, hone one's skills.

Forge your life from your interests.

Congratulations on your success so far. Get a haircut.

As an aside I'm delighted to only hear about jespah's oral proclivity.

No it is not really useless.

The sheepskin can be framed and used to dress up a dull wall.
