Current treatments for depression include medication, therapy, and other alternative treatments. Medication means taking anti-depressants and other doctor-prescribe medicines to alleviate symptoms of depression or put one in a relaxed or sedated state. Alternative treatments include taking herbal supplements like kratom, which are known to produce sedative effects. You could learn more about kratom on this website.

There's a plethora of information about kratom on the Internet, but the thing is not all you'll read online favors the herb. As a backgrounder, kratom is a leafy plant native to Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Borneo. Aside from depression, kratom is said to provide relief from anxiety, chronic pain, and might even fight addiction to opioid medications. However, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) banned kratom for sale saying it could possibly pose hazard to public safety.

Nevertheless, comments from people who have tried kratom as alternative medicine opposed the ban, making the DEA reconsider. Hence, the ban was put on hold. It would do you well to know more about kratom to see whether or not the DEA should really ban its sale or if there is no basis for their claim.

Going back to depression, in terms of therapy, the most widely used technique would be the Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy or CBT which is known for both its effectiveness and its safety. CBT focuses on helping patients alter their depressed thought patterns. Persons receiving this therapy are taught how to become aware of their distorted thoughts and to deconstruct them. CBT works on the premise that modifying thought will modify behavior which will bring about changes in emotions as well.

Family therapy is used quite often as a method especially when the patient's depression springs from and affects family relationships. Often, a focus of the sessions becomes the search for members to communicate effectively. Efforts are also undertaken to help spouses, partners or other family members to understand what depression is and to see the patient's behavior in the light of this new knowledge.

Medication is usually given in the form of antidepressants with strict monitoring due to some side effects. One of these side effects is the increase in suicidal thoughts. The use of antidepressants does not cover the entire picture that is depression. The medication helps restore chemical balance and effect mood change. However, long-term recovery from depression needs more than medication; lifestyle changes and counseling or therapy is still needed to establish a life free from depression. In addition, after a person is diagnosed as no longer needing medication, there is the task of withdrawing from the drugs.

Studies have shown that a combination of CBT and drug therapy is by far the most effective of interventions. It is also possible that this can better prevent recurrence of depression. Sometimes antidepressants are supported by alternative treatments although as a whole, most alternative practitioners prefer to do away with antidepressants. Music therapy, art therapy and lifestyle changes are among the techniques that figure prominently among alternative techniques to treat depression.
Regardless of the many available treatment options, the key player in treatments for depression is still the person who is undergoing treatment. Because of this recognition, most therapies seek to affirm the person's capacity to change his or her thinking, emotions and life. If friends and family are to help, this affirmation must be echoed in support of the person going through the pains of depression. However, if affirmation is not enough, treatment options must be considered including consumption of kratom, which is sold in most internet drug stores.
