Computer numerical control (CNC) machining is a form of subtractive manufacturing, meaning that materials are removed (rather than added) during the manufacturing process. This implies that CNC is a process that begins with a piece of product (called the blank) which is used to move fast cutters that quickly cut away the material, and then create the final piece.

This is in essence the opposite of additive manufacturing (e.g. 3D printing) in which three-dimensional objects are constructed layer-by-layer with materials that are loaded into 3D printing machines.

How do CNC machines function?

CNC plasma-cutting makers
Similar to CNC milling machine, CNC plasma-cutting machines are also used to cut materials. But, they differ from milling machines in that they are able to perform this process with a powerful plasma torch which can attain temperatures up to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and are strong enough to cut through rough metal!

CNC laser-cutting machines
Not to be confused with plasma-cutting CNC machines, laser cutting CNC machines are also designed to cut through tough materials, but they use an optical laser to complete this job (rather than the plasma torch). They are typically equipped with a higher level of cutting accuracy, but aren't quite as strong than plasma torches.

CNC electricity ejection makers
It is a CNC electrical discharge CNC machine, also referred to as a spark cnc machine, is a special type of CNC machine that makes use of electrical sparks in order to manipulate materials into the shape desired. They are assembled between two electrode, after which the computer dictates how much electrical discharge the electrodes produce - and how the part can be reshaped.
