Best Small Sleeping Bag for Bikepacking: NEMO Riff 30

Side sleepers have always had it tough in the woods. They're conditioned to degrees that can turn even their worst nightmare into paradise, but what about all those n00b side sleeper Problems? The answer came when Nemo designed ruffles and curves for an improved night's rest with plenty of comfort features built right into this sleeping bag - which will help make you more content than ever before as well.

Our Verdict

Whether you're a side sleeper or back slumberber, we've got one of the best bags for your needs. Our Riff 30 is shaped more like an hourglass so it's perfect if that's what works best with YOUR body.

We love this bag! It has the widest lower-body dimensions of any and it's so easy to roll or stretch your legs in every direction. There are also vents for releasing heat, plus an inconspicuous stash pocket that you can't see unless you search really hard (which we know everyone loves).

The Riff offers the perfect balance of warmth and lightness, but its hourglass shape means that you have to use more material than an exponentially colder climate would require.

Performance Comparison

Warmth

The new Riff 30 is a lighter, more compressible bag than its predecessor. It also has an impressive 29°F EN Lower Limit temperature rating despite containing just 10 ounces of 800 fill power down.

We found this bag to be pretty optimistic when it comes down winterizing your vehicle. The level of warmth provided will work well in warmer 3-season conditions but could become insufficient if you need something more extreme like early spring or late autumn cold weather.

Weight

The new, lighter version of the Riff is an exciting change that offers consumers more options for their packing needs. The model we tested weighed 1.91 lbs on our scale--a competitive weight with other bags on today's market! This has been achieved through slight reductions in bag dimensions and removal 5 oz down insulation material (which provides about 2 additional temperatures).

The Riff's weight cut has made it a much more competitive bag in its category, but we worry that this might come at the cost of warmth and comfort. Life is always about tradeoffs; if you're looking for something light with poor insulation qualities then by all means go ahead and choose an REI Flash 18.

The new Riff 30 is an amazing start to reducing pack weight, weighing only 2 pounds.

Comfort

With a roomy fit and impressive insulation, the Riff 30 is an excellent winter hat for any outdoor enthusiast. It's also nicely lined with warm fabric to keep your head nice n' cozy on those cold days.

The Ahrefs has the most comfortable bags for side sleepers because it leaves plenty of room to extend one leg toward your body while keeping the other straight.

Packed Size

The compression ratio on this bag is 12% smaller than the previous version. The after-market sack works well, but with a sturdy one included in your purchase you'll have even less to worry about.

Most backpacking sleeping bags in this category compress relatively well, so it's not a particularly distinguishing metric. Most people will appreciate that you don't have to purchase an additional compression sack since the bag comes with one.

Versatility

The clever design of these bags includes small slits on the upper side which you can open and close with a zipper. These "girls" let out excess heat when opened so your items stay warm longer.

The Gill Zipper is a small yet innovative addition to any outdoor apparel. It helps keep you warm by maintaining insulation around your body, while keeping moisture away with its waterproofing capabilities.

They're small, but they have a ¾-length main zipper to give you more venting options and extend the bag's usable temperature range.

Conclusion

The Nemo Riff 30 offers an interesting collection of innovative features in a spacious bag that's exceptionally comfortable. Unfortunately, this vast space and sleek design come at the expense of warmth for those who need extra heat when they sleep; however it may be worth suffering through these drawbacks if you're looking to get more room while maintaining comfort levels during your slumber session.
