Lets just say........

Ok.

Hy-pothetically speaking.....

Lets say that you deposit 112.00 into your checking account.

You know, right off the top of your head that 87.00 of that is going to the gas bill, and another 20.00 to your gas tank, and the rest to groceries.

You have already done your math, your account reflects that to a T.

All bills have posted

All charges posted

everything is in the clear..

Then you wake up the next morning and sign on to the bank web site to pay the gas bill only to see that your account now has 790.00 in it where it should only have 190.00

Shocked

sweeeeeeet.

Well, not so sweet.

And lets say that you HY-pothetically call the three clients whos checks you deposited just yesterday to make sure that their check cleared for exactly the same amount as they wrote to you... That no one at the bank 'mis'read their check.

And THEN, lets say that they all report that everything is a-ok according to their bank.
And so , lets pretend that you call YOUR bank, and they say that THEY show nothing wrong either.

Would you , lets say, pretend to keep this error?
Or return it?

you know..... we are pretending and all..

OH!

and lets throw in the fact that your car battery died the other day costing money out of your savings that is now almost way to low to even cover a rent payment if need be

AND- dont forget..In this pretend world, the bank DID say everything was ok..

If it's ok with the bank, it's ok with me - given the direction of the discrepancy. Not that that's ever happened in such large amounts, of course.

Sorry to be a party pooper, but ultimately, the error may well be discovered by the bank.

That's the bad luck with online banking: on the moment I pay a bill - it's away from my account.

Not hypothetically, RE-ally. Even before the the other has got it, even when the banc is closed.

9,999 times out of 10,000 the bank catches up with you down the road.

The person to talk with has limited ability to see everything going on. Somwhere someone is assigned the task of strightening out all of the errors caught during routine auditing and eventually they'll figure out that the amount shown as deposited in your account doesn't match the amount on the deposit slip and/or the amount on the checks that cleared and they'll be mighty quick to take it back out of your account.

The bank will find this. If you spend it, you'll owe it.

Tempting as it is--and believe me, I understand how tempting it is--I'd pretend the extra money isn't there.

I'd wait it out. Consider it not yet resolved.

Would suck big-time to spend it, only to have the bank realize the error at a really bad time.

Perhaps it is naive, but honesty does have a way of working out in my favor. Someone, somewhere does notice.

If they say it is okay and I double checked.... Sadly I would keep the money, lol.

How about you transfer it to savings and pretend it isn't there for let's say, a year. then it's yours.......

^^ this

is what I have done.
I took it out of my checking account, mostly because it was knocking my math off seeing more money then I should have in there..

OOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooo
its tempting to keep it.
But , I called , and they said there was no problem.
So , as of right now, they wont pull it.
So, it needs a home.. yeah, YEAH thats it!

yes , but no details.

Meaning, I cant see each check, or how much cash I deposited online..
all it will show is the lump sum.

Do you have a receipt for the deposit?

Why not write a letter? Ask for a written response. This way you'd have written proof that the money is yours. They won't be able to ask for it back.
