Recently, I was in a store buying something else, and I saw some Tempur Pedic mattresses on demo. I tried one of them out, and was mightily impressed. When I went to epinions, I found that people either loved them or hated them.
Now this mattress is not cheap, and I don't want to make a mistake. I could get an top of the line innerspring mattress for 1/2 the price. I am not interested in buying a Tempur Pedic knock off.
Have any of you or someone that you know had any experience with Tempur-Pedic? What do you think of it?
Another option is the Westin Heavenly Bed, which is made for Westin Hotels. Individuals can buy them. I have slept on one of them for about 8 nights, and it is fabulous.
I think that most of my concern is longevity of the product. Any experience that you can share?
One of my better friends has the Tempur pedic mattress.
She didn't bother with the boxspring as it fits on top of a regular box spring anyway. And the box spring for it was another many hundred dollar add on. HA She figured, you are not sleeping on the box spring so why buy it?
She has had it for 4 years.
2 pregnancies, one back surgery, and is in love with it.
She got it because she was having back problems. Had the surgery, and it didnt help.
The mattress on the other had did help.
It helped offer some relief in her spine where her nerves were getting pinched.
Granted, she may be a special case, but I have watched her go through this whole thing and I have to say, if I could afford one, i would.
They DO have a 30 day guarantee.
Maybe you could just get the mattress, put it on your bed and try it out for a week.
Sadly, visiting the store is not long enough to be able to tell if you are going to benefit from it or not.
Phoenix
Phoenix, this is the Select Comfort mattress I bought in 2003 after I got rid of my waterbed. I love it as it solves my painful hip-back discomfort. I set mine at #50 but can adjust it if necessary. It's also very light weight so even I can move it when necessary and also is easy to change the bedding.

BBB
shewolfnm- I have the same problem as you friend with my back. I really need a mattress that is very supportive, but comfortable. Right now, I have a Simmons Beautyrest mattress, which we have had for, believe it or not, 20 years, with 13 years of steady use. (It used to be in my vacation house). Considering, it has stood up beautifully, and is still in pretty good shape, but it IS time for a change.
I am glad that you said that your friend had the mattress for 4 years. A few people on epinions complained that the mattress deteriorated in about 3 years. That is totally unacceptable. The thing about epinions, which had about 125 reviews of this mattress, was that they were either raves, or knocks. It occurred to me that people who review are either those who are disgruntled, and want to vent their spleen, and those who are so enamoured of the product that they want to rave. Therefore, most people who are merely satisfied never bother to review a product.
BBB- Mr. P. and I will be going to a big bedding store this afternoon. I plan to spend most of it on my back, checking out different mattresses. I think this store has Select Comfort also.
I would say she is a very good example of how well the mattress has worked for everyone.
She has a 3 year old little boy and a new born baby.
So they have had spills of all kinds, jumping, playing, all kinds of rough housing have happened on that mattress...... and 4 years later, she is still happy with it.
She DOES have a mattress cover that she used when her son was a baby to help protect the mattress from diaper spills when he was younger, so if you are worried about the mattress , you may want to invest in one..
It seemed to help her..
I dont see how it can deteoriate that fast frankly.
I have been in her home since before she bought it. I see first hand how well it looks and works.
I change the sheets on it when she cant, and both of her kids have and are sleeping on it too. And it is still in good , if not great condition. And so is her back!
Update:
I had gone to a bedding store, and checked out the Tempur Pedic. All of a sudden, I saw I model that I hadn't seen. It was top of the line, and obscenely expensive. I laid down on it, and was hooked.
Anyhow, the long and short of it was that I bought it. It is as advertised. The only way that I can describe it is that it is very comfortable, yet very supportive. This model is made of higher density material than the other Tempur Pedic models, and sports a pillowtop.
For those who are considering any pillowtop mattresses, please be aware that regular fitted sheets do not fit the mattress. You need to get sheets that are 17-18 inches deep.
Nowadays, most mattresses are not made so that they can be turned over. They can be turned around, head to toe. The one that I bought is so damn heavy, that I doubt that I will even be able to do that now, and certainly not in a few years.
Yay!
Im glad it feels good for you.
EVer since this thread began, the mister and I have discussed getting a regular temper pedic..
That would require us to open a credit card though and Im not sure we will... just yet..
shewolfnm- IMO they are definitely worth the money.
I absolutely agree.
We just dont exactly have that money just yet.
A credit card would allow a smaller monthly payment, but that is a payment we are not sure we can shoulder.
So let me know in a month or so ( how long have you had it?) how much diffrent your back feels. Especially the lower back
I also ordered a new mattress, and did some research on it before
ordering. When we went up to Santa Barbara we stayed at a Marriott
there and the bed was just pure heaven. Needless to say, I slept like
a baby. Upon inquiring at Marriott they told me that they use a company
called Jamison who solely manufactures for hotels.
After some research I came to the conclusion that Jamison is a reputable company making excellent mattresses since 1880. So I ordered one
through Marriott as Jamison doesn't sell to individuals directly.
Stay tuned.....
Calamity Jane- That is very interesting. There are a number of hotels that feature a particular bed. I had stayed a few times at a Westin. They feature what they call the "Heavenly Bed".
Believe me, the bed IS heavenly. But it isn't only the bed. They have these yummy pillows and comforter, all in white. It's like sleeping on a cloud.
When we decided that we wanted a bed, I Googled "Westin Heavenly Bed", and found that you could buy the entire ensemble. If I had not discovered the Tempur Pedic, I would have bought the W bed.
Phoenix,
it seems the hotels get quite a few inquiries about their beds and
bed collections, as some have started selling them to its clientel.
Marriott offers a nice bedding collection as well, not cheap, but so
worth it.
My matress should arrive late September/early October. I can't wait!!
