Some advice

I went to the local nursery to acquire some plants for around the house. I like to have a few pots of flowers around and my windowboxes are generally overflowing with flowers. I'm not sure why; I guess I like the colors or something.

Anyway, I am walking around the nursery, calculating what I needed and I came to the realization that this little outing would cost me somewhere in the neighborhood of three to four hundred dollars.

I looked in the cart. Probably $100 worth of stuff in there, but that was still more than I was willing to spend and it wouldn't have been nearly enough to finish the job I had in mind.

I pushed the cart between a couple of large planters and decided to scrap the project.

On the way home I pondered the situation. Too late to start stuff from seed. I finally resigned myself to the fact that my household would be devoid of color for the summer. At that precise moment, and I am not making this up, the clouds parted and the sun broke through and illuminated the area before me. A cemetery. A big one. With more friggin flowers than you could shake a stick at.

I pulled my truck through the gate and had a look around. The place was empty. I started loading pot after pot into my truck. I bet I have thirty of them. Some of them I will divide and transfer to smaller containers and others I will attach wires to and make hanging baskets.

Am I the first one to come up with this idea?

I'm going back for another load tomorrow. If any of you have cemeteries nearby I suggest you do the same.

Eventually the flowers will run out.

Have you thought of raiding gas stations and McDonald's for their hostas?

I had a client in Brooklyn who had me plant virginia creeper in her front garden bed to discourage plant theft. She put out a big sign that said "Warning: Poison Ivy, Do Not Touch!". She never lost another shrub after that.

I was thunderstruck by this idea of Gus' and it's comes at a fortuitous time. Our building was just about to spend $3000.00 on ground cover and a large bench. I happened to surfing the Web on my phone during the garden committee meeting when I read Gus' advice.

I immediately rose and raising both my hand and my voice I volunteered to take care of the problem at a minimal cost. Quickly gathering some of the old gang from the neighborhood, we armed ourselves with shovels and buckets and headed for the park.

I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of this before. Look at at those frigging plants just sitting there!!!!

Joe(we only took about half. Fair's fair)Nation

PS How much should I bill the building for?

Green Witch, nothing would deter gustav though. He who steels from
the dead, will steal just about anything, even poison ivy.

I'm an old pro at this method.

One word of advice, however: wait until after the burial service attendees leave before grabbing the booty.

Did you manage to grab any flowers in those green cone things?

Those things are great. All you do is stick them in the ground. No planting required.

No, but I got some nice marble walking stones for the back garden. They have words etched in them so you can get a better grip when walking barefoot.

I think one says "Fred Stray Cat 1903-1970"

Anyone you know?

I did an early morning run and you would not believe how many flags you can find just stuck in the ground by some of these old statues. This weekend there seems to be a lot of extras.

I am going to eat some breakfast and then make a nice display of them in the front of the building.

I am going to bring some of them to the meeting with Al.

I went back to the cemetery last night and started digging around a little. I found some really cool old boxes. They even had handles on them. Fortunately I had my cousin Cletus with me and he helped me load them in my truck.

They're out back of the corn crib right now.

I'm going to open them up a little later on and see what's inside.

I guess there's big theft & small theft when it comes to pilfering other peoples' plants .... Me, I pick a little bit here & a little bit there of whatever appeals to me as I go about my regular walks around the place. Most of my geraniums (great for drought-stricken Oz gardens!) where acquired this way. They grow in no time from quite small cuttings.

If you join a garden club in your area most of the members will give you free plants that they have propagated. As a bonus there are a majority of women in garden clubs and you can show your own propagation method.

Yeah, I know, Gus.
You've gotta be quick, though, so's the locals don't catch you at it!
