Quote:In some parts of Canada, the holiday is colloquially known as May Two-Four. This phrase has two meanings: the holiday always falls on the Monday of or before the birthday of Queen Victoria on the 24th of May, and a two-four is Canadian slang for a case of 24 bottles of beer, the most common packaging of Canadian beer.

Well, Happy Queen Vickie Day to all the Canucks here!
I was musing, on a thread about the Australian movement to republicanism, about the state of monarchism in Canada. The irony struck me that I have the luxury of time to muse about such things because this is a national holiday celebrating our ties with the British monarchy, and although I am ambivalent to the removal of those ties (as in, can't really see any practical purpose to do away with it, although in an ideal world I'd rather not have the British monarch as our top dog) I do enjoy the several long weekends associated with it.
I guess this long weekend could remain without a monarchy -- but it seems a little déclassé to make it a national beer holiday.
I don't know, but don't think that Queen Victoria drank much beer, although I've heard that she did take a little cocaine in her tea, for strictly medicinal purposes.
So, how do you celebrate the day? And what's the state of your monarchism?
