I propose a Q&A forum in which those with questions will find those with answers!

My questions for today are:

What is Senator Jay Rockefeller's reputation?

How much of a tomato's nutrition is in its skin?

Got answers?

Tomatoes are high in potassium and vitamins A and C, and are cholesterol-free. In fact, recent scientific studies(3) indicate that eating cooked tomatoes reduces one's likelihood of suffering from cholesterol-related heart problems and digestive-tract cancers. Why cooked tomatoes? Cooking tomatoes releases lycopene, a strong antioxidant, from the skin of the tomato.

is that some of what you're interested in?

Are we talking about the endogenous nutrition of the tomato or are we talking about the nutrient value supplied by the tomato to the human consumer?

The skin of the tomato contains a high concentration of fiber, which is important to maintaining a healthy colon. Vitamins, sugars, lipids, etc of the tomato are enclosed within the skin. I suspect that the tomato contains very little protein.

Hi, Jespah -- I couldn't find a forum for random "silly" questions. Is there one?! Just didn't feel I could throw the tomato question into the Politics Forum where I usually hang out. Or Books, for that matter..

Thank you, thank you for the answers on tomato skins. When I lived in Spain, we didn't do that fancy thing of skinning tomatoes before making gazpacho. So I didn't yesterday and then wondered whether, if I got a complaint (seldom! gazpacho is So-o-o good) I could say something like (thank you, Sweet!), I don't want to deprive you of your lycopene!!

As for Jay Rockefeller, he married Sharon Percy, the senator's daughter. She has been a force behind setting up national crafts organizations (and other art stuff) aimed at providing small industries for rural areas (like WVa). I'm just curious about his general reputation as a personality and effectiveness as a senator.

Jay Rockefeller was never married to Elizabeth Taylor. For those who care about these things, here is the list:

Nicky(Conrad) Hilton Jr. : hotel-chain heir : '49-'51
Michael Wilding : actor : '52-'57
Michael Todd : producer : '57-'58
Eddie Fisher : singer : '59-'64
Richard Burton : actor : '64-'74 and '75
John Warner : US senator: '76- not sure.
Larry Fortensky : trucker : '91-'96

Liz was very young when she married Hilton. As the story went, her was more interested in the gaming tables in the hotel they were in for their honeymoon, than his bride.

Wilding was much older than Liz, and gave her a modicum of stability.

Mike Todd was the love of Liz' life. He was killed in a plane crash, and she as distraught and.......

Sought comfort from Eddie Fisher.

Eddie Fisher had been married to Debbie Reynolds (Carrie Fisher's mother). Liz stole him from Debbie.

She then went off to make the movie, "Cleopatra", and dumped Eddie for Richard Burton, who was married to someone else at the time. I believe that they were married and divorced twice.

She and Burton had a volatile relationship.

She married John Warner.......don't know much about him.

Liz has had more illnesses an operations than anybody I know. She was hooked on pain killers, and went to drug rehab. There she met Larry Fortensky, a truck driver years younger than herself. Looks like that one didn't work either.

One interesting side story. I remember when Liz became a grandma at 38, from one of her sons by Michael Wilding.

Check this out, especially the "Life Covers" at the bottom of the page::

John Warner is known as "the dumbest man in the Senate." When he was married to Liz, he bought one of my paintings as a gift for her. When you put the two facts together, you come up with something which I never particularly cared for!!
