I received a letter and some photographs from Swimpy this morning. She says hello to everyone at A2K and would like you all to know that she is having a wonderful time.
Swimpy, and this was news to me, apparently has a whole busload of friends (besides Walter) in Germany already and upon her arrival a bunch of the womenfolk met her at the plane and after discussing family and current political events, one of the women, Helga I believe her name was, suggested they, as a group, go out into the woods and cut down a few trees.
Swimpy was thrilled with the idea and told me the sight of the trees crashing to the forest floor was exhilarating and something she would recommend to everyone. Afterwards, Helga took a photo of the group. Swimpy is the one leaning casually in the center...
After the outing in the woods, Swimpy and several of the women went into town to check out Walter's newspaper stand. Swimpy mentioned to me that nimh had told her that Walter's newspaper business was not that impressive and she was quite surprised to find results to the contrary. She said not only was his business flourishing, but that he had one of the best corners in the city and his record profits from the month of January had enabled him to purchase a fancy new hat. Swimpy bought a newspaper from Walter and they agreed to meet later for a tankard of beer...
Swimpy then continued on down the sidewalk and was delighted, several blocks later, to see her friend Olga walking toward her. Olga had her brother in tow and the two of them appeared ready for some serious shopping.
Swimpy said, "Hello, Olga."
Olga looked up and was momentarily confused, but then recognized Swimpy and her face turned into a mask of delight and she screamed, "Swimpy!"
The two of them hugged and cried and clutched each other for a good long time, neither being able to speak. Finally Olga said, "It is so nice to see you after all of these years, Swimpy. Oh, and by the way, this is my brother Vilhelm."
Swimpy looked at the man and found him to be quite handsome and a little shy. She said hello and he nodded and a sliver of a smile crossed his face, then he cast his eyes downward and said no more. Swimpy, sensing something was troubling the poor man, returned her conversation to Olga.
"Olga, I've always meant to ask you a question. I know a woman in the States who is originally from Germany. She is a member of A2K and seems like rather nice person, but there is something about her, something dark and sinister, and I just can't help feeling that she is hiding something. Her name is Calamity Jane. Do you know her?"
At the mention of Jane's name Vilhelm dropped to his knees as if someone had punched him in the stomach.
Olga stared at Swimpy with hatred in her eyes and hissed, "Calamity Jane! That hussy! That despicable wench! She is the one who destroyed my brother. She took Vilhelm for every dime he ever had, used him and abused him, and then.... left him. She left him a broken man, Swimpy. How dare you mention that women's name in my presence."
She glowered at Swimpy for what, in Swimpy's eyes, seemed like an eternity, and then she glanced at her brother, still on his knees, and moved quickly to help him to his feet. Then she led him away, saying "She isn't here, Vilhelm. She is in the States. She can't hurt you anymore....
Olga turned to Swimpy and gave her the finger as she walked away.
Swimpy was very upset over the incident and had to go back to her hotel room and take a nap. She assured me she would write me again and send more photos.
And she told me to tell Jane, and I quote, "You are in some serious trouble...you..you...homewrecker!
