I'm interested in learning about Traditional Chinese clothing. I have a
question about the jackets that are traditionally worn by men. Are
those jackets called Tong dwon? Were those jackets origianlly made with
bamboo buttons? WHy are the buttons on those jackets called Frog buttons?
Please let me know. Thank you. Very Happy

JG, from dictionary.com for "frog" : "an ornamental fastening for the front of a coat, consisting of a button and a loop through which it passes." I think a frog is also the thing that you fasten on your belt to hold a bayonet or a rapier (or at least it was a couple centuries ago when men used rapiers). The frog is that usually black ornamental bit of knotwork that was sewn on either side of the jacket opening. That term probably doesn't have any specifically Chinese meaning, but a universal tailoring meaning. Though I seem to remember that frogs have some sort of symbolic meaning in Chinese thought, but probably not specifically in relation to that part of the costume. In other words, that's likely to be a western term used as a descriptive of the Chinese garment.

these kind of clothes should be called Tang attire or Han clothes.
Coz ,in Tang dynasty, the race of Han dominated the China. So the clothes they wore we call Tang attire today.
