Christmas gift dilemma

Reply Wed 6 Dec, 2006 09:54 pm
So my mother hinted that she wants the VHS tape of this old movie called "Love With A Proper Stranger" for Christmas. I just looked for it on Amazon.com and they only have two vendors selling it new, and the cheapest one is SIXTY-FIVE DOLLARS.

Now there are some used tapes up there as well, and they can be had for about thirty-five dollars.

You see my problem? Spending SIXTY-FIVE DOLLARS on a VHS tape seems like a somewhat stupid move to me. Am I obligated to get this damn movie brand new?

Kicky, wouldn't it be cheaper to buy her a bottom of the range DVD player, and the relevant DVD?

It's your mother, for christ sake! She gave birth to you, nurtured
you, and comforted you throughout your childhood.

The very least you can do, is buy her what she wants. 65 bucks is
nothing when it comes to your mother. Cheapskate!!

I think Kicky's in for a kicking on this one.

(tee hee)

By the way, I was thinking in £'s, an not $'s when I made the suggestion. Sorry!

Just be sure to polish it up and remove any fingerprints and smudges from the box, then take it up to a UPS Store type place and have it shrink wrapped before giving as a gift.

LE, that might be a frightening thing. It is one step closer to knowing how to use a computer and then mom might find her way to the internet and stumble upon A2K and wonder who the heck this Kicky person is that keeps calling her "mom."

Kicky, have you checked eBay?

Never thought of that, Bnet.

Kicky's Mum on A2K.....just think about all the embarrassing gossip we could get out of her. Maybe even a baby photo or two, with him splashing away in his little bath!

MARVELLOUS!

Ebay has a "buy it now" for $24.99:

Love With a Proper Stranger

Mothers don't care if it's new, so long as it plays.

Oops, I forgot to check back here. Thanks for the advice (and the insults) everyone, but I already bought it. I ended up gettting it from the highest-rated seller through Amazon for thirty-five bucks. It is used, but in very good condition, supposedly. I looked at those vendors who supposedly had it new and I don't see how that could be, if it's out of print. With the money I saved, I also got her another Natalie Wood movie called, "Splendor in the Grass". So there.

Oooh, Splendor in the Grass is a good one too. You're such a good son! :::pinches your cheek::: I'll let you choose the location.

Another idea for you to consider as a bit of embellishment on the same theme, look on the internet for photos of the actors and/or movie scenes and print them out on some nice paper and frame them for mom to hang. Print out some of the reviews, bios and movie making information and put those into a nice report folder for her.

Make a gift tag that looks like a movie ticket for the outside of the package and include some microwave movie popcorn. If you wanna be really really nice, include an IOU coupon for her to cash in for a date at the movies with her son.

Here are some sites to consider for Splendor:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055471/

and for Love With:

Yo, Bufnet (may I call you Bufnet? It's just easier), I'll take your pinch and reciprocate with a squeeze right back at ya. You choose the location. Smile Thanks for all those great suggestions. Yeah, I thought that movie looked interesting too.

Oh my god, I've just used an emoticon in two straight posts. I hate emoticons! In fact, I even hate the word "emoticons" itself! It's so goddammed nerdy! Down with emoticons!

When I was in Vienna last week, we saw the cafe (Mozart) where they shot the movie "The Third Man." When I tried to find the movie on the net, it costs over $50, and was discouraged in buying it. Anybody know where I can find one for about $25?

c.i., Third Man links for you to investigate:

http://german.about.com/library/bl3rdMan_fotos.htm (location shots)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Third_Man (film bio)

http://www.filmsite.org/thir.html (another film bio)

http://www.amazon.com/Third-Man-50th-Anniversary-Collection/dp/other-versions/B000025RE7/ref=imdppov_dvd_alt/104-4491984-3339948

If you look at the amazon page for other format versions, they have VHS tapes for as low as $8.

I was in a similar situation last year. My dad LOVES Bond but doesn't have the dvds. So I started with Dr No and was going to continue buying one each year. Until last year. From Russia with Love was 75-100 for a used! Insane. This year, the used appears to be only 55-75 but with christmas approaching, who knows.

My picture of Sacher Hotel. Did you know they are famous for their cakes?

The Mozart Cafe where some of the movie was filmed (we were informed by our local guide).
