As per the Hindu calender in the Month of
Bhadrapada, on the fourth day, we bring Lord Ganesha's Clay Idols Home and \ or in Public and celebrate the 10 day festival. On the 10th day, the clay idols of Lord are immersed in deep water like lakes, ponds, river and favorably sea, in order to help
Ganesha return to Heaven were he came from.
Being private originally, the festival was made public by the Indian Freedom fighter
Bal Gangadhar Tilak prior independence for people to gather and have more awareness about the freedom struggle in order to bring coordination in the freedom struggle activities.
According to him, people are supposed to express their thoughts thru entertainment and protest against the British Rule thru this festival. But after independence the festival continued to be like social gathering and entertainment, there by becoming an official Festival.
Millions of Ganesha idols are sold every year for the festival and few of them even 18-20 feet high, are displayed in public.
