"Turn your radio on,
Listen to the music in the air,
Get in touch with God,
Turn your radion on . . . "

Just a line from a song folks, don't take it so hard . . .

I've heard debates and read articles, and now, today, NPR's Talk of the Nation has had a discussion on the proposed new deregulation of the radio license restrictions. Critics say that this will put that medium into the hands of even fewer individuals, to the detriment of programming diversity and community service by radio stations. Proponents say that theirs is the only medium so restricted, and that "programmed" radio services give the public what they want, at a savings to the broadcaster, who is, after all, in it for the money.

I'm interested to know the opinions of others on this subject . . .

Well . . . i'm waiting . . .

(By the by, CdK, there is no forum into which this fit, other than general. There is a TV forum, why not convert that into "Media: Radio, TV, Newspapers, Magazines, etc."?)

Re: your suggestion I think it's a good idea. Radio is not covered as of yet. I'd probably split TV and Radio from the read media but forum stuff is gonna have to wait till I catch up with my work load.

Clear Channel Inc, has the largest contingent of right wing talk shows , so the entire issue of "deregulation" probably wont be covered by any of their Limborgs. Cynical? you bet. Ive seen how our "free choice " in entertainment has been whittled away from the early days of FM when I was in College till today when everything is formatted , packaged, and bundled. Look at basic cable TV.
Nope, the entire entertainment and information spectrum is being bundled. the owners of the radio station groups sponsor the concerts. Whens the last time youve seen a major jazz concert advertised? Right now its the year of Metallica .
what about Keith Jarrett??
The only reason I keep my subscription to NPR active is because its the only thing around next to CBC where different spins are presented

I keep on the lookout for music and information I want to take in on the net, in stores and by word of mouth. It's so hard to find radio and other outlets for the stuff I care about. The new deregulation, like evey other deregulation I can think of, is just new ways to get our money while pickling our lives like a commodity.
