Officials are distancing themselves from a state-sponsored CD of children's songs recorded by prison inmates after it was revealed a child sex offender helped put it together.

Apparently, a group of prisoners designed a CD that featured songs for children. One of the guidelines was that prisoners who were incarcerated for sex offenses against chilren were not to participate. One man, who was a sex offender, was not involved in the songs, but did help in the technical aspects of the effort.

Quote:
The prison system said last month that 15,000 copies of the disc would be distributed to prison groups and inmate families as well as to community groups, such as public libraries and social service agencies. Lyons said the plan was scaled back to include only prison- affiliated groups at the request of the Resource Network.

What do you think about this? Should the distribution of the CD have been scaled back? Do you think that this entire project was positive or negative?

I for one would hesitate to take parenting tips, which are included on the CD, from prisoners.

The whole project strikes me as a little weird. I'm not really sure what I think.

I can't believe that the video is tainted because a child molester helped solve some technical problems, any more than a copy of Highlights would be tainted because the mailman plays ugly games with little kids.

Boomerang--

When the budgets permit a lot of prisons these days are working on improving the inma parenting skills. Remember, a lot of inner city kids grew up in the care of single mothers and have no role models for being fathers to their children.

Would you find it weird if members of the Armed Forces serving overseas got together to make CD's of children's songs for their kids?

Theoretically one of the purposes of prison is rehabilitation. Personally, I'd rather that these guys were spending their time on making CD's for their kids than swapping tips on how to be better burglars or more creative crack salesmen.

The whole thing seems a bit ridiculous to me. I abhore child molesters in any form. However, this person had no contact or input into anything that would affect the children.

This is like saying that if a molester worked on the manufacture of the CD player he is involved with the children. Shocked

I agree with Noddy.

I like the idea that prisoners are doing something that is worthwhile socially. I think that the whole idea is very helpful, in terms of the prisoner's rehabilitation. For some, it might have been the first time that someone did something very productive, of which he could be proud.

I can understand why people would not want sex offenders to be a part of the CD. itself. In terms of technical assistance, I see absolutely no problem.

Such is done here as well - though I don't know if in a prsion but in a psychiatric hospital for mental ill criminals.

That cd - it came out about ten years ago - was a great success ... and is still been sold.
