I find myself being somewhat age-ist, now that I've reached the exalted age of mid-30s....
"Kids" used to be anyone under my age, then it was anyone under 18... now it's anyone 10 years or more my junior...
Does this taper off, or will I someday be considering people my age as "kids?" (Before my own kids reach my age, that is....)
Context.
A 30-year-old at the skate park is ancient; a 30-year-old politician is a kid.
I do think I consider more people kids as my own age advances, though...
I was calling my second cpousins kids, but they are. I think I'd only use 'kid' at someone over (ummmmmmmmm) 22 as a joke.
Anyone under about 23ish.
depending on the individual, my cut off range is 25-30.
How about the definition of kid as "whom you can get arrested for having sex with."
You know, because according to all the news reports, that's what myspace.com is for.
Usually I reserve the term "kid" for those below the teenage years. Once you are 13 you are a teenager then although a young one an adult.
I always chuckle under my breathe when my husband consistently refers to the young rookie baseball players as kids. They may be young, but they are an adult.
Anyone younger than me.
If they're older than me, they're an old fart, of course.
I might add that "middle age" is always at least 10 years away....
I have a stepson who is 50. This influences my Kid-Cutoff Line.
If you've never...
dialed a telephone
played a phongraph record
seen a TV test pattern
wound a watch
...you're a kid in my book
anyone who could be my bilogical kid is fairgame for "kid" in my book.
btw, "keeeeeyid" is a term of endearment in the rap community...
