Traditionally Korean women have occupied about the same status as women in other Far Eastern Asian countries. Basically, chattel.

ROK is in the midst of rather drastic change. The educational levels have been steadily rising, and opportunities for young Korean women are greater now than in the past. Korea has been an economic powerhouse for the last decade, and prosperity has generally been good for women.

Still, women in the ROK are far less well off than American women were 20 years ago. Women in managerial positions are rare, and most women still are tied to home and family. There's still some stigma for young women to be involved in "man's work". Feminism has progressed, but at a very slow rate.
