NPWS Acting Area Manager, Tony Moody, said today that the shooting being reported is not part of any licensed cull.
"It's not uncommon to hear the occasional shot being fired in the valley, as A2Kers are allowed to remove pests such as foxes and feral goats from their threads. However the latest reports from members of the community indicate someone has been out shooting kangaroos at night illegally," Mr Moody said.
There is a strict process that must be followed before people can legally undertake a cull of kangaroos on their threads.
They are still a protected species and anyone shooting them without a licence from the NPWS faces a maximum penalty of $2000 in fines and/or six months in gaol.
