Reach schools are universities whose average students possess SAT and GPAs well above yours.

Edgar has it.

These days kids apply to colleges on three levels: "Ace in the Hole", reasonable applications, and the "reach" school. In Alex's case MIT would expect high SAT scores, high grade averages, and vivid-colorful-well-rounded extracurricular activities.

Trudeau may want to explore new territory by allowing Alex to attend the reach school. It really depends on his plan for future development of his comic strip.

She also got into RIT and Harvard, among some others, but didn't get the letter yet, just found out today on the Intternet.

TomKitten--

I'm glad someone else is taking an interest. When a favorite character has a multitude of delightful options, the situation should be savoured.

I wonder how loong Trudeau will keep us guessing about her final choice. . .

A good while, I hope.

He might have her go to Harvard, then promptly get expelled for causing trouble and wind up at Walden.

I've been trying to catch up since I saw this. I haven't been a daily reader for, gosh, a dozen years? But I do check in at Slate occasionally. Last time was a while ago. I barely "know" Alex.

I have to put in a good word for Caltech though. It's a fantastic place.

Alex is well worth knowing--in her own words, "a model-thin patent-holder from Seattle.

Joannie's attempts to be the doting and informed absentee parent at college application time were hysterical.

Today's installment makes me think: What if she opts to go some other route than college?

Edgar--

By this morning's installment she just may. Score one more for Trudeau's grasp of the vagaries of adolescence.

Trudeau needles MIT.

I'm still betting on Walden.
