These days kids apply to colleges on three levels: "Ace in the Hole", reasonable applications, and the "reach" school. In Alex's case MIT would expect high SAT scores, high grade averages, and vivid-colorful-well-rounded extracurricular activities.
Trudeau may want to explore new territory by allowing Alex to attend the reach school. It really depends on his plan for future development of his comic strip.
She also got into RIT and Harvard, among some others, but didn't get the letter yet, just found out today on the Intternet.

I've been trying to catch up since I saw this. I haven't been a daily reader for, gosh, a dozen years? But I do check in at Slate occasionally. Last time was a while ago. I barely "know" Alex.
I have to put in a good word for Caltech though. It's a fantastic place.
