Am I in the wrong profession?

As far as memory recalls (and no guarantees of truth here), my dirty-bearded, sandal-wearing high school guidance counsellor told me on career day that I should have been a psychiatrist...all I could think of saying was: "Interesting. Now tell me what you really think?"

Looking at bills piling up, cooking for people who don't really like good food, I wonder...should I start charging for the constant advice I give people for free, especially via messenger? Hmm... Rolling Eyes

An online cooking advice column, or an advice service with personalized answers? Not bad, really. If start up and operating costs aren't a killer, why not give it a shot? I've heard worse ideas.

Hmm...methinks too much free advice regarding food on the net already....A2K doesn't pay me for moderating the Food and Drink forum, and I would never ask (heh heh, a joke)....nope, need a new idea. Seems people are more willing to pay for personal advice...

Free? You misunderstood. Money, after all, is the most sincere form of flattery.

1. do not ever believe anything a guidance counsellor ever says. ever. i've never met one who didn't need to get some guidance counselling themself (i'm speaking as someone who has worked in and around vocational counselling for over 2 decades now).

2. are you involved with any of the foodie forums on-line? one of the groups i'm involved with seems to result in the chefs/cooking teachers/truffle makers getting quite a bit of business through their chatting.

3. are you marketing to the right group? A friend of mine who offers cooking/wine/photography tours to Italy with her husband, recently discovered that they were undervaluing their services by a considerable amount. They were offering tours at about $5000/2wks. Then they met people who were more interested in something in the $50,000/2wks range. After our jaws came back off the floor, the discussion of how to re-set the tours began.

Don't give up on what you love, unless, well, i can't think of any unless.

ehBeth, one thing I have never done is give up on my dreams. Send me some links for the foodie forums, if you don't mind. Thanks! Also, I do plan to raise my prices. Too many people tell me I am a bargain for what I do Confused

$50,000/2 weeks - well, perhaps not in our group ! but when you look at some travel ads $50,000/2 weeks is not unusual; for some trips 747 airplanes are converted to take as few as 50 passengers IN COMFORT - that would be sleeper-seats, champers, fish-eggs(pardon me : caviar) etc. i would be happy just to get a little more legroom.... i've seen trips through europe advertised in private rolls-royce etc. - price : if you have to ask, you (and i) can't afford it! dinner with wine and drinks at a good european restaurant can cost you $500 p/p - noooo problem(not that i've tried it!). happy travelling! hbg (at a german restaurant ONE cup of coffee(no refills, please!) will set you back three to four bucks.....

Hi all. I agree with previous poster who said not to believe high school guidance counselor. Mine nearly had a heart attack when I told him I wanted to take both French and Spanish. Also I took one of the diagnostic tests and they told me to be a florist! I was so jealous, one of my closest friends got secret agent. P.S. She is a high school bio teacher now : )

Ehbeth's idea sounds promising for leads. I'll check and post back if I have anything in food specific my files. Good luck.
