'NY Times' Sunday Preview: Special Poll Asks, Would You Date a Republican?

NEW YORKAlmost one in three Democrats in New York City say they would never date a Republican, and one in four Republicans there feel the same way about Democrats. These and other quirky findings emerge from a special poll of 1,011 New Yorkers released in this coming Sunday's New York Times Sunday Magazine, with analysis by John Tierney and Christoper Buckley.

Other findings:

* Donald Trump trumps Al Sharpton by almost 2-1 for "worst hair" in the Big Apple.

* 28% claim they would move to the suburbs "only under penalty of death."

* In the upcoming New York Senate race, slightly more New Yorkers expect Jeanine Pirro's husband to embarrass her than Hillary Clinton's hubby.

* Asked which animal would make the best mascot for the city, 12% said "rat."

* "Ambition" was picked as the best quality of New Yorkers, and "impatience" the worst (these may overlap, of course).

* Asked what size building should be erected at Ground Zero, more than half said any size "as long as they stop arguing about it."

* 56% call themselves Demccrats, only 12% Republicans.

* 78% agree with the statement that "if you can make it here you can make it anywhere."

I haven't dated a Republican yet. The closest I came was a gal who voted for Reagan. Today's Republican women are mainly that way because they are married to Republican men. I know of very few practicing Republican single women.

I wonder what would happen if they polled a bunch of Republicans and asked them if they would date a New Yorker.

Oh, sure I'd date one. And have. Never slept with one, though. They're not much fun.

I had a wonderful affair with a Republican but that was an aberrance. In real life I wonder if I could date a democrat today, given d's flaccid engagement in the body politic. Looks around for green men...

On the other hand, a man in the hand beats several in the bush....

I did date a republican. We steered clear of most political discussions. He wasn't very staunch about his party.

Date one? - I married one. I guess I didn't realize how strong until it was too late. I guess we are the Maria Shriver/Arnold couple of the East. Honestly - I am an independent and try as much as my husband has - he cannot convert me. I am about as independent as they come. He probably didn't realize that about me either until it was too late.

Well, here I am in a dedicated relationship with a registered Democrat. Fortunately, I am an anarchist with tolerance.

And fortunate that Diane is as well!

Do all anarchists make their partners sleep in chairs? (I'm still ticked off at you for that.)

The lady Diane has moved to the t.v. area where she sleeps on a reclining chair with a foot rest. (she is now closer to the coffee pot than before and has it perking along by the time I reach the kitchen) progress is made one small step at a time.
