years ago I read a story about a crime writer/solver (?) sitting in a diner with a critic (?) discussing how a crime could not be solved through Induction. They overhead another pair of diner guests and through only a very few comments discern/solve a crime the other guests have committed. Can anyone help identify the story?

It could be a Roald Dahl short story. It sounds a bit like
Tales of the Unexpected.
