2000-0615, Health, Bulimia.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center eight percent of female Soldiers, have the eating disorder compared to two percent of the civilian female population.

2000-0615, Health, Smoker’s 50 Percent More Likely to Leave the Army the First Year
Tobacco use is a powerful indication of first term attrition. In "Assessing Fitness for Military Enlistment: Physical, Medical, and Mental Health Standards", published in the January National Research Council states, "smoking is the most powerful factor in prediction success in the Army”. 23 percent of smokers left the Army in the first year compared to 15 percent of non-smokers.

2000-0615, UCMJ, SGT Kills Love Rival with IED at Ft Carson.
At Fort Carson, Colorado, an Army SGT steals a fragmentation grenade. He is angry with a civilian who lives in Denver for romancing his girlfriend. He pulls the pin on the grenade and puts the grenade in a Pringles potato chip can. He mails the can to his rival. The man opens the package, and the grenade goes off killing him instantly.
The range OIC got in trouble, he signed for 100-grenades and was supposed to count 100 explosions, he miscounted. The hand grenade ranges were placed off limits at Carson for three-years after this.

2000-0615, Adultery, PFC Charged with Attempted Adultery.
PFC (E3), Stephen A Whitfield, 24, of D Battery, 319th FA receives five-months in the brig for attempted adultery, a violation of Article 80 (attempt) of the UCMJ, said MAJ Jeff Nances.
PFC Whitfield met a civilian female off the Internet for lunch and planned to have intercourse with her but ran out of time and had to go back to work.

2000-0615, Health, MREs Are Killing People!
Soldiers are warned not to give MREs to Somalia civilians. COL Karen Fridlund, chief dietician for the Army surgeon general says, "MREs are so rich, the starving people’s digestive system will go into shock.” In addition, the surgeon general warns not to give thirsty Somali’s water because American water has too much salt US CENTCOM orders soldiers not to feed starving children or give the thirsty water.
Author’s Note: This is preposterous, Humanitarian Daily Rations (HDR), in the yellow bags, have twice the concentration of calories, as MREs and salt is good in hot climates. If humans eat something nonpoisonous but disagreeable humans just vomit or get diarrhea, they don’t die.

2000-0615, Race, CSMs and Race.
Only one out of every thousand Soldiers makes CSM. Of the few that make it, 40-percent are black according to the Office of Army Demographics.
That is a large percentage considering:
23 percent of enlisted Soldiers are black.
16 percent of combat arms Soldiers are black (Most in FA and ADA).
12 percent of officers are black.
07 percent of combat arms officers are black (Most in FA and ADA).

2000-0615, Health, Veterans 1,075 Vets Die Daily
1,075 WWII Vets die every day.
305 Korean War Vets die each day.
200 Vietnam Vets die each day.
Retirees, veterans, and Active-Duty Soldiers are eligible for burial in a VA cemetery. 10 percent of veteran’s request burial in a VA cemetery. Headstones are provided at government expense.

2000-0615, Gender, Military Women Are Treated Special.
Anonymous Intelligence branch officers during a Rand study on women in the Army:
Girls don't have to play by the same career rules their male counterparts do, but they seemingly receive special protection. For instance, male officers in MI are told that it is an absolute necessity for their professional development to serve as combat arms intelligence officers, in combat arms battalion or brigades. Women cannot serve in those positions because of the possibility of having to face direct combat. Female MI officers who have never served a day in a combat arms unit are now serving as very senior officers in the MI community. Their careers did not suffer from a lack of combat arms experience.
Males ask why not. In addition, women cannot do any heavy lifting because of biological differences between men and women. When it comes to erecting tents, laying concertina wire, or camouflaging equipment female Soldiers usually are seen guarding weapons.
Girls get pregnant. Soldiers work regularly with petroleum products in the motor pool. Army doctors grant profiles against such work to protect the fetus, men must perform the duties and the Army personnel system does not replace these women. One senior NCO reported a female Soldier who was not at work for three-years. She wanted a large family and was either pregnant, on sick call due to morning sickness, recovering, on convalescent leave, breast feeding her babies, or caring for sick children.

2000-0615, Hookers, Korea, J.H. School Hookers.
Between Osan and Camp Humphries is an all-girl middle school. The women would get out of class and walk down the street to a truck rest stop and hitch their skirts up. They would stand at the exit to the truck stop and hitchhike.
When my wife and I drove between Camp Humphries and Osan, she would hit my arm and say, "keep your eyes on the road.” These women were not available for US Soldiers they were trying to be picked up by Korean truck drivers.

2000-0615, Drugs, Commander of AFKN.
The unnamed Commander, CPT, of the Armed Forces, Korea, TV, and Radio Network caught with 4-pounds of cocaine in his Seoul Apt.

2000-0616, Gay, COL at Ft Carson Fired.
COL (Dr.) Edward L Modesto charged with two counts of indecent exposure and nine counts of homosexual conduct.
COL Modesto exposed himself outside of Laundromats in Colorado Springs while dressed as a female and wearing a blond wig. None of the homosexual charges involved other Soldiers though CID is investigating other improprieties at Ft Carson.
Author’s note: the glory hole at Fort Carson is at the library.

2000-0625, UCMJ, Army Doctor Murdered in Itaewon.
Warriors see a spike in Anti-American Demonstrations American Military personnel are urged to pay more attention to force protection considering a "spike" in demonstrations against the American presence in Japan and Korea. The increase in demonstrations against the American presence in the region is probably due to the summit in Okinawa, Japan and because of some recent political developments in South Korea, Pentagon spokesman Ken Bacon said at a briefing here July 20.
Many anti-American incidents have occurred near bases in South Korea. The most violent was the murder of Army Dr. (MAJ) David Berry, June 25. Berry was stabbed to death while walking with two other doctors in Itaewon, a popular shopping area in Seoul. Dr. Berry was a pediatrician on Active-Duty. He was stabbed in the heart.
A 37-year-old Korean man was charged with the crime. Other attacks have been made against American Warriors, a Korean national working for US Forces Korea and the spouses of American Warriors. American officials in Korea have urged US personnel to travel in groups or in pairs, Bacon said. They have urged personnel "to be more aware of the situation around them and not to get into big crowds or angry crowds,” he said. "They've urged them to report any suspicious activity to MPs immediately."
The Korean man was found innocent in a Korean court due to temporary insanity.

2000-0815, Hookers, US Military Sponsors a Brothel in Hungary.
On weekends, Soldiers stationed in Bosnia could take a C-130 transport plane to Budapest (Butty-Fest), Hungary. The Soldiers would spend a weekend sleeping on a cot in an AF hanger. They had a shuttle bus service to local shopping and entertainment districts during the day. Many Soldiers were getting laser-eye surgery in Budapest very inexpensively. Soldiers could drink alcohol on the AF base, but local bars and brothels were off limits.
At 1800, bus service would start taking Soldiers to a wonderful place called CPT Jacks Whore House. Every hour on the hour, a bus would leave for CPT Jacks and a bus would leave CPT Jacks for the Air Base.
Drinks were $1 (1.63-2022.) You could have any female in the place for $25 (41-2022.) The women would dance totally nude on stage. The women were beautiful. It was safe; there were MPs at the door.
Even female Soldiers went. Nobody got in trouble in Bosnia, nobody sharked. Soldiers had a sexual outlet other than masturbation or female Soldiers. Once a male MSG tried to shark on a female SPC who got on stage and danced topless at CPT Jacks. He recommends an Article-15, no action was taken.
I remember later I was walking with the same female SPC and noticed she was eating some cherry flavored candy. I, being a smartass said, “Can I have your cherry?” She replied in all sincerity, “OK, I will pretend to be a virgin and you can **** me.” I laughed it off and even told my boss LTC Karr about it, we both thought it was funny.

2000-1215, UCMJ, Civilian Walks Away with Guns and Ammo.
Mr. Jeffrey Klots, 36 (a civilian) dressed as an AF MAJ bluffed his way onto Ft Meade, MD and left with an Army Chevrolet Blazer, 40 M-16 rifles, 10 M-9 pistols and 12,000 rounds of ammunition.
The smooth-talking Mr. Klots stole the weapons to train a group of Civil Air Patrol (CAP) students. He was sentenced to two-years’ probation and a $3,000 (4,900-2022) fine.

2000-1231, Military, Statistics for the year 2000:
Homosexual chapters from the military:
842 Males as per request.
79 Males caught in the act.
284 Girls as per request.
27 Girls caught in the act.
PT Test (APFT) Easy for Girls. An Army study found the APFT is too easy for women. A higher percentage of women max the sit-up and run portion. The study showed that:
30 Percent of new recruits are failing the APFT.
06 Percent of new Soldiers max the APFT.
The disparity between male and female is widest for Soldiers in the 27-year-old and older age groups.:
12 Percent of older women max the two-mile run.
06 Percent of older males max the two-mile run.
08 Percent of older Soldiers fail the APFT.
Girls match men point for point in the sit-up event.
Maximum standards for the push-us should be lowered for both sexes.
The younger the Soldier, the less fit:
02 Percent of young Soldiers Max the APFT.
30 Percent of young Soldiers fail the APFT.
In the year 2000 and prior 10-percent of all women in the military were pregnant at any given time.
In the year 2001 when war started the pregnancy rate for women in the military was classified Top-Secret. If you know the pregnancy rates after the year 2001, please send it to me.

2001-0112, Health, Friends don’t let friends drink water
Ft Jackson, SC basic trainee dies from drinking too much water. PVT Shiahenda, R. Mishoe, 20, she felt dizzy after drinking water, taken to Moncrief Hospital, died of hyponatremia.

2001-0121, Gender, Long Hours Long Gone.
The biggest morale problem in the Army was “long-hours.” Work calls for most leaders was sunup to sundown and Saturday morning 0900-1130 work call in civilian clothes.
Female Soldiers changed all that. By 2001. Most Army posts have a local policy forbidding work past 1700-hours. Or weekends, unless it was on the training schedule.
Why? the childcare facilities close at 1800. This was a MAJOR change in the Army culture.

2001-0122, Accident, Colman Propane Heater Kills Two.
Two Soldiers assigned to NTC, Ft Irwin, CA died Jan 12 from carbon monoxide poisoning. They were inside an Army issue squad tent; this type of tent is made of a thick canvas material and a floor. They were using a small propane heater.
It rained that night; the rain closed all the pours in the tent material. The next morning, CPL Eric Norman and PFC Marcos Ruiz, 11th ACR, were found dead in the tent by other Soldiers in their unit.
Authors note: Paratroopers jump in the rain often; the rain closes the pours in the nylon parachute material, and you float down much slower. I was at NTC for a Leaders Training Program class when this happened. It rained 0.23-inches the night of January 11, 2001. It rained so hard Bicycle Lake was a lake. three-days later, the desert bloomed with cacti.

2001-0726, Religion, Muslim LTC Throws Pipe Bombs (Six weeks prior to 9/11)
A 36-year-old U.S. National Guard pilot was arrested and charged with attempting to plant bombs on a Wisconsin Military base in an incident that appeared to be aimed at U.S. involvement in Kosovo, officials said. LTC Mititch of Milwaukee was arrested at his home following a tip. Babler said Mititch was an Arab, Muslim U.S. citizen. Mititch broke into the Wisconsin Air National Guard base on Wednesday and dropped two live bombs when he was chased away, leaving behind graffiti including the phrase ``Free Kosovo'' scrawled in red paint on a satellite dish. The spelling is the Albanian one for the province. The base, located at Milwaukee's Mitchell Field, is the home of the 128th Air Refueling Wing, elements of which were sent to Britain in 1999 to back up NATO air missions over Kosovo. NATO air strikes against the Yugoslav provinces of Kosovo and Serbia in 1999 helped end Serb oppression of Kosovo Albanians and paved the way for their return to Kosovo. NATO Soldiers remain in the region to help oversee a fragile peace. LTC Tim Donovan, a representative for the Wisconsin Army National Guard, said Mititch was a helicopter pilot with that group, based in Madison, Wisconsin, from 1988 until his resignation with a rank of LTC late in 1999. He said Mititch entered the guard from the U.S. Army Reserve. During Mititch's guard duty, Donovan said, Mititch's unit was not assigned to the Balkans or anywhere in Europe. The FBI said it considered the incident a terrorist act and said the bombs -- which were later deactivated -- could have caused death or severe injury. Mititch was charged with violations of federal explosive laws and with attempting to place a destructive device proximate to an aircraft, Babler said.

2001-0817, Military, Marine and His Princess.
LCpl Jason Johnson, 26, stationed in Bahrain fell in love with and smuggled a Bahraini princess out of the country with forged paperwork. The ensuing political ramifications were tremendous, but Meriam al-Kahbifa could stay in the US with her new husband.
Johnson was busted one rank and booted from the USMC. ABC TV made a movie of their adventure.

2001-1125, SF, War, A CIA Officer is the First American Civilian KIA in the GWOT, 7-Pages.
First U.S. Death to Enemy Action. CIA Special officer Johnny M. Spann is the first
American killed. He is murdered by Taliban during a riot at Gala Jangi Fortress prison in Mazare Sharif. 16 special ops troops fight 500 POWs for 72 hours. Air and gunship strikes kill most of the rioting Taliban by Nov. 27.
Spann was part of a small group of CIA paramilitary officers who went into Afghanistan just 16 days after the al-Qaida attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Less than two months later, the CIA along with U.S. SF Green Berets and a massive aerial bombing campaign helped Afghan militias drive out the ruling Taliban.
Spann was killed when hundreds of Taliban and al-Qaida prisoners, guarded by just a handful of Afghans, tried to escape from a fortress jail in Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan.
Spann is survived by his wife, Shannon, a retired CIA officer and three children.

2001-1212, Aviation, Eject!
The B-1B bomber pilot CPT William Steele gave the order to eject 15-Minutes after the bomber’s engines began to fail. The automated ejection system blew the crew hatches away and then ignited each, ACES-II, ejection seats. All four crewmembers were safely ejected over the Indian Ocean.
It was 2230-H and pitch dark as they floated towards the water from 15,000-feet. They were 60-miles from land. Their Acft problem started 40-Minutes into 10-hour flight. The crew was from the 20th Bomb Wing, Diego Garcia Help was on its way. MAJ Brandon Nugent's KC-10 tanker had just taken off from Diego Garcia when the emergency call went out. The tanker was from the 7th Air Refueling Squadron, Travis AFB, CA.
The downed crew was in the water for 28-Minutes until the tanker flew overhead and made radio contact. The Navy destroyer USS Russell was on its way from Diego Garcia. The rescue was joined by a Navy P-3C Orion from Patrol Squadron Four; the P-3 had a huge spotlight and was able to focus on the crew.
Navy LT Dan Manetzke was the skipper of the small rescue boat that pulled the crew from the water after a two-hour swim. He said he was just as happy to find them as they were to be rescued. The B-1B has the worse safety record in the AF, since 1984, 17 crewmembers have died in seven crashes.

2002-0104, SF, War, First U.S. Military KIA in the GWOT.
SFC Nathan R. Chapman of 3rd Bn., 1st SF, is killed in a firefight in Paktia. He was a way cool guy; I can tell by his hat.
