You've listed three of my favorite pieces! But I can easily add three more. Coincidentally, I will actually be performing the Arpeggione Sonata in August. The pianoforte part will be covered by my friend on classical guitar, and I'll play the cello part on the bass clarinet. Here's a video of the piece being played with the original instrumentation. Schubert is my favorite composer and his early death occurred as he was making great creative strides – we can only imagine the masterworks he had left to contribute to the Western musical tradition. Anyway here are three of my favorites:
His "Mozart" symphony!
Not even performed until ten years after his death. The tension builds to a spectacular climax. Truly a "great" symphony.
Two cellos really enrich this amazingly complex and beautiful piece.
I came to classical music a bit late in life, my mid 50s and it was a while later before I discovered Schubert who is now a firm favourite. Thanks for your choices including the video with the original instrumentation, I look forward to listening to them. It wasn't easy to choose just three, enough I thought to give a taste, and I did have the 3rd mvt of your 5th symphony choice on the short list.
