Giant cryptic in Lovatts colossus crossword 223
50d Buckleunder US private vessel (4,2) ?i?i?n - think it might be Give in but it doesn’t fit with my 61a answer of in peril for ‘When furious, Penny left in danger (2,5)
Any help would be much appreciated Smile

@Brophie,
Could 50d be Give up?

@Brophie,
I think 'give in' is correct, GI (us soldier) followed by vein (vessel)

When furious, Penny left in danger (2,5)

My guess

When furious could be 'inflamed'

Penny left (remove the 'd')

in danger = in flame

@jespah,
Thank you Jespah for your suggestion but 50d ends with a “n” so Give In would fit but then doesn’t fit with my answer of “in peril’ of 61a Sad

@steve reid,
Thanks for your suggestion Steve but although inflame would fit it doesn’t fit in with my 50d answer of give in Sad

@Brophie,
2nd try

in anger

in danger (remove the 'd')

in anger = when furious

@steve reid,
And wasn't (is it still?) an abbreviation for a penny, d? In the older UK money system, I mean.

It was under the old system but after decimalisation in 1971 it became usual to say '1 new penny'. I'd grew up under the old system and so whenever I see the word 'penny' in a crossword I tend to think of the letter 'd'

Glad to help Brophie and happy to see you finished it

@Brophie,
Oh I love these puzzles (but I don't have the grid in front of me and I get the feeling Steve doesn't either)! Ask for help any time. Smile
