1775-1112, Race, White Men Bar-Blacks from the military.
They fear giving Black men guns and Blacks were not good soldiers.
1778-0223, Race, not enough White men want to be soldiers. BG Varnum decides to let blacks in his unit.
1779-0616, Race, BG Varnum creates Varnum-Bde, comprised of Black slaves. A US slave brigade. 5,000-Black soldiers fight the War for Independence.
1777-0731, Leadership, Youngest US General.
The Marquis de Lafayette, a 19-year-old French nobleman, was made a major general in the American Continental Army. He was commissioned a French officer at the age of 13.
1778-0314, Gay, the First Gay Scandal in the US Military.
LT Frederick G. Enslin was brought to trial before a court-martial. According to a report by GEN George Washington: LT Enslin was tried for attempting to commit anal sodomy. GEN Washington's secretary continues to describe the results of the trial: "His Excellency the Commander in Chief approves the sentence and with abhorrence and detestation of such infamous crimes orders LT Enslin to be drummed out of camp tomorrow morning."
The diary of LT James McMichael records the sentence being carried out on 15 Mar 1778: "I this morning proceeded to the grand parade, where I was a spectator to the drumming out of LT Enslin of COL Malcom's regiment. He was first drummed from right to left of the parade, thence to the left wing of the army; from that to the center and lastly transported over the Schuylkill with orders never to be seen in camp in the future. This shocking scene was performed by all the drums and fifes in the army the coat of the delinquent was turned wrong side out."

The (loyalist) Ethiopean Regiment was formed in 1775, former slaves fighting against their former masters, and gaining their freedom.
