I've run into a real head scratcher that is DRIVING ME CRAZY that I can't seem to fix. I was getting desktop popup notifications from Facebook in the bottom right corner of my screen until all of a sudden a couple days ago I wasn't. I went into my Facebook settings, went over to the left side of the screen and clicked on "Notifications". I then scrolled down to the section near the bottom that says "Where you receive notifications" and clicked on the word "Browser" like I always do. I noticed immediately that "Chrome push notifications" was turned off. Thought "That's weird, always have it on" so I turned it on, and the slider went to the on position but it was very light in color along with every other notification setting. I knew something wasn't right so I refreshed the page and it went back to off. Tried again and got the same result. I tried it on a different browsers (Firefox, and Edge) got the same result. So that rules out Chrome as the problem. Turned off all my extensions in in including adblockers, no change. Now comes the weird part. Went to my wife's Windows 11 laptop and into her Facebook notifications settings (She has Firefox) and her browser push notifications was turned on a nice dark blue color like it is suppose to be. So out of curiosity I turned it to off then back to on and it did the same thing my desktop. So now I've got 2 computers that won't display Facebook notifications! CAN ANYONE HELP ME??? I'm about ready to take it down to the computer repair place but I thought I'd give you guys a chance first. You've always been I great help to me in the past. I'm afraid to ask any of you with Facebook to turn yours off and then back on to see if it behaves correctly.
Was suggested I go to openai chatGPT and see if they have an answer. WOW, did they ever have an answer. Here it is. "You’re not crazy — and you’re not missing a setting. What you’re describing is a known Meta/Facebook server-side change (or bug) that has been rolling out, and your testing already proved the most important thing:
👉 It is NOT your browser, NOT Windows, NOT extensions, NOT your PC.
The key clues you discovered:
Happens in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge → rules out browser
Happens on two different computers → rules out hardware/Windows
The toggle turns light blue and reverts after refresh → classic server-side permission denial
It worked before and suddenly stopped → confirms an account-level or Meta-level change
What’s Actually Happening (The Real Cause)
Facebook is silently disabling browser push notifications on many accounts, even though the toggle is still visible.
This is not controlled locally anymore.
When you turn it ON:
Facebook accepts the click visually
But their servers immediately reject the change
On refresh, it flips back OFF
That’s why:
The slider looks “washed out”
It won’t stick
It behaves identically across devices
This is 100% Facebook-side, not user-fixable.
Why Your Wife’s Laptop Broke When You Toggled It
Her account was still flagged as “allowed” on Meta’s servers.
The moment you toggled it:
Facebook re-evaluated the account
Removed browser push permission
And now it behaves exactly like yours
Unfortunately, once it’s removed, you can’t re-enable it yourself.
Why Facebook Is Doing This
Meta has been:
Reducing browser push notifications
Forcing users toward mobile app notifications
Limiting desktop push due to spam, abuse, and low engagement
They haven’t announced it, but this exact behavior has been reported widely since late 2024–2025.
Things That Will NOT Fix It (So Don’t Waste Time)
❌ Reinstalling browsers
❌ Resetting Windows notifications
❌ Clearing cache/cookies
❌ Turning extensions on/off
❌ Computer repair shop (they can’t fix Meta’s servers)
You already proved all of this logically.
What You Can Do Instead (Workarounds)
✅ Option 1: Facebook Mobile App (Only Reliable Push Now)
Desktop browser push is being phased out.
Mobile app notifications still work 100%.
✅ Option 2: Email Notifications
Facebook still honors these:
Settings → Notifications
Email → Turn on for messages / activity you want
Not instant like push, but consistent.
✅ Option 3: Check Windows Notification Permissions (Just to Be Safe)
This won’t fix Facebook’s decision, but make sure nothing else is blocking:
Windows 11
Settings → System → Notifications
Ensure browser is allowed
Focus Assist OFF
(This is just a sanity check — not the root issue.)
❓ Can It Come Back?
Possibly — only if Facebook re-enables it server-side.
Users have reported it randomly returning months later after account updates.
There is no manual override.
Final Verdict (Straight Talk)
🔹 You did nothing wrong
🔹 Your computers are fine
🔹 This is a Facebook account-level restriction
🔹 A repair shop will not help
🔹 You already diagnosed it correctly
