This post isn’t a question — just me airing out a conclusion I’ve come to recently.
Rewinding a bit, I started working in IT back in 2007. I had moderate success, but truthfully, it bored me. It had its challenging moments, but 90% of the time, the hardest part was just waking up on time.
I’ve always been a very active person. I love sports, and I used to compete in Jiu-Jitsu and CrossFit (before I had kids). In 2020, I hit pause on my IT career to pursue something in the fitness world. I enrolled in a training course, became a personal trainer, and coached CrossFit and weightlifting. This felt like my true passion…
Or at least, I thought it was.
Three years passed. My second child was born. Financial pressure started to build, so I decided to return to IT — which, surprisingly, I missed. Especially the mental challenges. But now, just like before, I’m mostly bored.
The ironic part? In my last performance review, my boss gave me a score of 115%. I overachieved. I got promoted. During my workday, I do everything I’m supposed to, I help my coworkers, and then… I just have loads of free time. I end up watching YouTube, doing my own thing, running errands, working out.
The truth is, I know I’m competent at anything I commit to — but I just don’t care about what I do for work. I thought sports was my passion, but when it became a full-time job, it lost its magic. Now I’m back in IT — and while I love the rare challenges — most of it is just... boring.
Honestly, I’m starting to think that no matter what job I have, I’ll end up disliking it. It’ll always feel like a chore.
Am I the only one going through this? Am I just lazy? Have I always been lazy when it comes to work?
(For the record, I’m an active guy. I train every day. I'm married, 40 years old, and a proud dad to two kids under 4 — they’re the love of my life.)
@emmeesse,
i think it's safe to say that many of us do not especially enjoy what we do for a living.

well,
yeah... that's why they pay you.
me, i've been doing the same thing (more or less) for forty years.
for the most part i do enjoy it.
at times it becomes a slog that challenges my ability to be patient.
on rare occasions it becomes so overwhelming that i become physically ill...
@emmeesse,

1. The reason this one line stood out to me is because you specifically stated what you love.
2. Are you implying that if your job was more challenging, you would find more joy in what you do for a living?
3. Are you bored because your job has become too easy to you?
@Real Music,
That line jumped out at me, too.
If the day to day slog feels dull, try opening your own business....
