Life could exist in a two dimensional universe according to physics. Physicists and philosophers have long claimed that life can form only in a universe like ours, with three dimensions of space and one dimension of time. That thinking may need to be revised. Physicists have assumed that only two spatial dimensions could not allow the kind of complexity to maintain life. They also think gravity would not be viable in two dimensions, to the extent solar-system-type objects would hence not form. But is that really true? Research has now shown against all expectations that a 2+1 dimensional universe could support both gravity and the kind of complexity that life requires. This philosophy presents a premise that shows a much simpler, purely scalar, gravitational field would be possible in two dimensions and this would allow stable orbits and a reasonable cosmology. The cosmologists and philosophers who promote the anthropic principle will need to rethink the possibility of an alternate dimensional life form.
