The Government Store

How do we curb food prices and what is responsible for food prices doubling in the last couple years?

My guess as to why food prices have doubled is Amazon buying Whole Foods.

Amazon said, when they bought Whole Foods, prices would FALL DRASTICALLY and they would sell products "AT COST". Well, where is it Amazon???!

Amazon is used to a very high profit margin. And when running a food chain did not seem to deliver, they hiked prices so their profits would fit to their likeness.

Now, in general, I do not mind paying higher prices, IF the extra money I pay goes to the lowly migrant farm workers so they can have a living wage. Or, to the local farmers struggling to keep the farm going.
But to line the pockets of a filthy rich conglomerate so their stock holders can double their investment? NO! NO! NO!

With obscene profits already I propose a food-liner run by the government and paid for by taxpayer dollars... People would flock to it for the savings.

A store that cuts out the Wall Street scalpers, speculators and the CEOs looking to double their ridiculous money grab. That rewards laborers, farmers and consumers, like it should be!

A store that cuts out all of the hand-outs to the rich and instead pays the workers and farmers and passes the savings from unscrupulous profiteering to the consumers. A middle class store that delivers on the promise of "at cost" items.

6 slices of American cheese at Whole Foods is 6 dollars! 6 dollars for 6 slices of dehydrated milk and processed flour. Do we really need people who have never shopped for groceries a day in their life running our food supply?

Perhaps then when the price gougers realize no one wants to pay for their third luxury car they will stop doing underhanded deals with their competitors to inflate the actual prices of goods.

Amazon needs to be broken up... Whole Foods has NOT delivered on the promise of lower prices, on the contrary, Amazon is bleeding the middle class dry of any gains with their ravenous food profiteering.

$11.99 per lb for a salad bar with processed food and dirt cheap fresh vegetables. NOTHING in that salad bar is worth that per lb... Not even 5 dollars per lb!

People on here gonna tell you food prices ain't so bad. I guess they have a comfortable income. It's killing me. My car insurance jumped up high and unexpectedly jumped 20 more bucks this month. I want to sell and move to an apartment or a low cost rent house. What this place would sell for would be ate up by rent long before I cash in at a hundred and two.

BULL ****. They never claimed that. And Whole Foods was always a higher-end grocery chain and never meant to rival dollar stores. It was never meant to be direct competition to Walmart or Target. That's your idiotic assumption on Amazon's acquisition of the chain. If you have a literal source validating your claim? Drop it here.

And since you're talking out of your ass. You failed to address that Whole Foods' own store brand, 365 actually is cheaper in many areas like cereal and other staples.

Food prices — which are up 26% since the start of 2020 — remain high because of the combined impact of:

Higher production, labor and fuel costs that have rippled through every aspect of the food system.
Supply chain disruptions caused by global events, severe weather and disease that have affected many essential crops and livestock.
Food companies that have sought to maintain — or increase — profitability while facing these volatile conditions.

Food prices aren't great. Many people are struggling to make due. But alternatively using the Both Side-erism (of both parties is BAD!! Rolling Eyes Evil or Very Mad Rolling Eyes Evil or Very Mad ) is never going get things fixed. That's funny - ironically using the rhetoric of conservatives. Especially, if your "protest vote" of a key vote keeps Republicans in power by default. Consider yourself lucky since you imply that you own your house.

That's an entitlement that many don't enjoy. And it undercuts your own argument.

As for your unresearched, already DOA thesis? You don't think the first and ... well... only argument that conservatives will bring up is the ABSOLUTE FAILURE of the Soviet model of state-run/Communism-run food markets and seemingly mile-long lines to get mere loaves of bread, etc.... Did you fail your history classes in high school and/or college? Dear lord did you kill your own argument faster than a shotgun blast to the noggin (sorry for the lame analogy as I'm not wasting time to compose a better one).

@tsarstepan,
You people who dispute the pain of inflated prices are being partisan about it. I don't argue from partisanship, but from a humanitarian perspective as a socialist. I don't blame just the Biden administration. I blame our entire government for as far back as necessary and include the Republicans in the condemnation.

You need to go back to school and reading lessons. From my "Food prices aren't great." You get "You people who dispute the pain of inflated prices[.]"

I live from paycheck to paycheck and do NOT have any savings, let alone retirement funds. So, don't you dare make assumptions. You clearly are doing better financially than I am. I only rent a room and never had an apartment to my own. Ever.

So, with using your reading skills (or lack thereof)? I'm assuming you desperately WANT or EVEN NEED Trump to win. Because that's what you get when you use the Republican tactic of both sides are terrible. Throw away your vote to Jill Stein or Cornel West. When Trump wins and tears up the Constitution? You can take that fake moral victory with pride. Be that immature brat at your age. Keep throwing that temper tantrum. I know that's what Trump and conservatives want from you. That quite literally was why Robert F. Kennedy Jr's whole presidential run was about.

@tsarstepan,
It's a waste of time talking to someone who thinks criticism of the current state of affairs translates into a wish for Trump's return. I quit supporting Republicans of any stripe when Reagan was president. I didn't give up on Democrats until the Clintons came in. Our entire government structure is my enemy.

You sound rather petulant and slightly bitter. These words of yours that I've quoted look just as well on you as anyone else.

Trump eats from a golden spoon and dreams of creating more "black jobs".

Black jobs for everyone! (except himself)

$11.99 for salad bar, there is nothing cheap about that.
The top selling item was meatloaf... It looked good in all the perfectly cut slices. The previous owner at Whole Foods once a week would have pan fried scallops and it was 9 bucks a lb.

I just can't see myself scooping lettuce and shredded carrots into a container that will be weighed at $11.99 per lb.

Chicken breast when it goes on sale at my regular market is $2 per lb.
Before covid chicken breast (on sale) was $.99 per lb.

Do you think Whole Foods ever sells chicken breast at $2 per lb?

Benadryl at the CVS is $16 dollars a bottle, how was the Dollar Store able to sell this same "extra strength" product with twice as many tablets for a dollar?

And Russia can't do anything without rampant corruption. It would seem our retail grocers have taken a page from the Russian model of commerce.

What do you expect from a Trump-like dictator? Monkey see monkey do. The answer is always, play more golf.

No wonder why a government store failed in Russia. The question is, would it fail in a thriving and robust democracy where people actually have a say in who is in charge?

With Trump's premeditated "Project 2025" attack on democracy, we can expect, if he is elected, to be ruled by criminals, thugs, hooligans, societies worst malefactors, where it is out of our power to unseat them from office...

Just like Russia...

...and a military that will stand idly by and let it all just happen...
