Is "am writing to ask" common for business emails, or is there a better choice? Does the rest of the sentence make sense?

I work with John Smith and am writing to ask that you email the letter you received from O’Fallon to me.

Yes, that is a common phrase in business emails, but there are many ways of saying that depending on whether you know the person or company, what your relationship is to them (ie, client), etc.

I work with John Smith:

and write to request a copy of the ...
and wonder if you can send me ...
and ask that you forward O'Fallon's letter to me ...
