Molecular-Biological Processes

Dear Oceanography Community:
Is it possible to use the molecular - biological processes by which certain marine organisms concentrate certain chemical elements within their body tissues in order to extract those chemical elements from sea water on a commercial basis? For example, to understand how the giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrofera) concentrates the element iodine within its body tissues in order to extract the element iodine from seawater on a commercial basis.
