Wiring a workshop from electrical panel

Can I get power from my house's electrical panel to a detached workshop? It would be about 65' in a crawlspace and then it would go through the foundation and then be buried. I was thinking about using #8 wire with a 40A breaker inside the conduit that would be fastened to the floor joist. Would I need a separate ground wire, since it's coming from the house's electrical panel? I have a 240v dust collector. Any ideas are welcome.

@dnoonkeste1,
Not too much of the electrical lingo.

The carrier -> the meter -> the main box -> various rooms of the house.

Possibly

carrier -> the meter -> separate boxes -> various rooms of house.

My understanding is that you want as much power you could get to your workshop without over-loading the panel and or distribution system.
I would have a different wire going to two separate boxes. This way if the power goes out in the house or workshop it would not affect the other.

However I would also consider feeding back to the line itself and how that scenario would also go
