Here is a technique to help relax and fall asleep. It's called frequency-following response. The theory is that the brain likes to follow a rhythm, and by tapping on any part of your body with your finger, the brain will follow it. By slowing down the rhythm, the brain also slows down into a state of relaxation and sleep.

I use it quite often now, and it works very well. Often, I'll be relaxed but still awake and realize that I have stopped tapping. I then recommence the tapping at the rate I stopped. Usually I will fall asleep in a short time, but if I don't I'm still relaxed and I don't care if I fall asleep.

It takes practice, and you may design the technique the way in which you feel comfortable. Instead of using two hands as the lecturer does in the video, I just use one finger. But I think if you do it regularly every night you'll get into a pattern of regular sleep.

How would you even know? I have no idea if I experience it, although I suppose I probably do.

I advise seeing a doctor.

@Jocund,
It sounds like he's sleep-deprived.
