What are the differences in Cuba's perspective on the so-called Missile Crisis. Why was Cuba relegated to the background in the solution to the missile crisis? How do you evaluate Fidel Castro's position on this matter?
@izzythepush,
Yes, it's an interesting read and an interesting time.
I was on a destroyer, stationed in Long Beach, during the Cuban missile crisis. Liberty and leave canceled, waiting to learn if the shooting would start. Grateful when the Russian ship turned away from Cuba.
@edgarblythe,
I was still in my mother's womb.
@edgarblythe,
I was in the seventh grade, I think. Friends and neighbors were readying up their bomb-shelters.The Bay of Pigs failed invasion was 1.5 yrs prior to that.
@Ragman,
And yet the US had nuclear missiles in Turkey, near the border of the USSR.
@pushocpw,
The most important thing for me is how angry Fidel was when the missiles were removed.
This was the first real negotiation over nuclear weapons. It opened the door so that Salt and Salt II and other treaties could be accomplished later.
We were making war on Castro before the missile crisis. He did what he felt necessary to survive. He took away the rich Americans' playground and tax haven and they wanted it back.
