The following is just my opinion; my own twist on the subject. I could be mistaken, but I don't think so...
Spirit -- the driving enegry
Soul -- the concious identity
Today these are often thought of as interchageable. However, I believe "spirit" represented merely a non-religious driving energy, analogous to battery power. To supernaturalists, residual or leftover power persists as is what a "ghost" consists of, much like an echoe.
With that consideration, the "Holy Spirit descended" might be rendered as "the energy of holiness was directed or channeled from the source of such energy".
"Soul" was a religious representation of the identity that survives death, usually with a destination that is determined by its purity or stability, and not seen or experienced by the living after its departure.
We can see/hear/feel Aunt Marsh'a ghost (spirit), walking the upstairs hall as she did in life.
We do not see/hear/feel Aunt Marsha's soul.
